Thursday, 23 January 2003

Kevin Ayers' "Joy Of A Toy" CD reissue hits the streets in May with the Syd Barrett guest appearance. The reissue features an alternate mix of "Singing a Song in the Morning" with Barrett as a bonus track. Barrett added his overdub to the track on December 17th, 1969, when the working title for the song was "Religious Experience." When the single was issued in 1970, Barrett's recording had been removed from the mix.

"We couldn't use any of the stuff because it was all over the place," Ayers says in the recent Mojo Magazine article.

Roger Waters' bass guitar was recently put up for sale in a charity auction. Roger gave the guitar to the sponsor of his tour after the gig in Warsaw, Poland.

The auction is for a foundation which buys medical equipment for the hospitals in that country. The bidding reached 42100.00 zl (about 11000 euros). The auction finished yesterday at midday CET, and there are some great pictures of the bass on the auction website. Our thanks to Scarlett from Poland for letting us know this information.

According to the new issue of Mojo Magazine, Syd's appearance on the Kevin Ayers track "Singing A Song In The Morning" is finally coming out on a new reissue of Kevin Ayers' "Joy Of A Toy" on CD.

Archivist Mark Powell, who is masterminding the EMI project said: "I've listened to 84 versions of that song, including one that clearly mentions Syd at the start of the take. Yes, there's weird guitar all over it, very wayward, but as a whole it's very together".

The track has been a frequent one on many unofficial collections but to date, none of them have genuinely been the version including Syd's guitar. This new release will be most welcome within the Floyd community.

Further to the story on our news page in December, the Omnibus "Crazy Diamond" programme the BBC aired last year will be released on DVD by DVDisc.co.uk on March 24th. According to our friend Keith Jordan of Neptune Pink Floyd, it is the exact same programme except for a few seconds of programme captions a minute into the programme plus the BBC Omnibus opening titles have been removed. It is 49 minutes long, and called "The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story". More details as we get them...
