The organisers of the world's first official tribute to the life and work of Syd Barrett - The City Wakes - have appealed for those who knew Barrett during his youth in Cambridge, to get in touch.
As part of the 11-day tribute, a new book is being written with interviews based on the memories of Syd's friends and family, along with some unique memorabilia from their personal collections. Focusing on Syd's early life and the exciting Cambridge cultural scene in which he was such a key figure, the book includes interviews, photos, drawings and letters that have never been seen in print before.
In an appeal made in local newspaper The Cambridge News, those who knew Barrett in the early 60s, and those who lived in the city at the time and went to the same bars, clubs and events as Barrett, are being sought for their contributions. More details of the book, and what those making the appeal are after, can be read at the Cambridge News website. To share your memories, you should email

The New Statesman today reveals that the legendary gala dinner, held on the Saturday night of the three-day Festival of Speed, included a special performance from Nick Mason and a couple of friends!
The dinner, an invitation-only affair for some 1200 people, is held at the Earl of March's Goodwood estate in the heart of Sussex on the south coast of England, and each year has interesting musicians providing the entertainment. Rumours spread quickly amongst the lucky attendees that Pink Floyd were getting back together for the occasion, but this was not to be...

With the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival celebrating their silver anniversary this year (25 years), a wide and varied bill has been arranged to mark the event. The series of concerts kick off on Wednesday, July 23rd, and presents some 13 concerts over a four-week period.
Marya Martin, the festival’s founding artistic director, has arranged a special show that BD
visitors should be interested in! On August 10th, Stravinsky’s “The Soldier's Tale” will be played with a roster of artists that includes none other than Roger Waters. In this piece, the second half of the concert, Roger will take the narrator’s part as well as that of the Devil and the Soldier.
“We put [Roger's name] quietly in [the festival programme] but he is huge,” said Ms. Martin with a conspiratorial smile. Roger last took part in the Festival back on August 7th, 2004, performing some selections from Ca Ira. The venue for Roger's 2008 return is the same - Bridgehampton's Presbyterian Church [see right; BD's Elliot Tayman attending in 2004].
Ticket prices are $30 while they last. They can be ordered by contacting the festival at (631) 537-6368 or by visiting www.bcmf.org.

Running this week until Saturday (July 19th), Aubrey "Po" Powell from the legendary Hipgnosis team, is having an exhibition in the 'Sala Municipal de Exposiciones de Formentera' in San Francisco, Formentera, of some of the "most important album cover works" that he and his colleagues (which includes Storm Thorgerson) created. He is doing this exhibition "to give something back to Formentera; it's an exchange with the island" as he has now made it his home.
According to Po, Formentera has been a great inspiration to him since he spent time there in 1967 with Syd Barrett when he was living with the French painter Marc Tara on the island, which lead to him relocating there permanently in 1983.
Amongst the many covers on show, there will be three images on display with a specific influence from the island, including of course the windmill cover from More.
This Saturday (July 19th) is the final day and concludes the Flower Power festival of Formentera which is a grand day on its own. The exhibition is open from 11am to 2pm all week and there should be a final viewing on Saturday evening at 7pm (TBC).

This news story is bound to raise a smile with some, and a shudder from others! The Discoballs album, a slightly bizarre tribute to Pink Floyd by French group Rosebud, is very well known to the older Pink Floyd collector. Released in 1979 on the Warner Bros label, it featured disco versions of Floyd songs performed by Claude Engel and Jannick Top, members of the legendary French prog group Magma.
Amazingly, some 29 years later, the album is getting a reissue on August 4th, 2008, this time on CD. For some reason, still a very sought after album, we predict that collectors of the... erm... slightly more unusual Floyd-related items will be keen to snap this one up. It's your chance to hear the likes of Interstellar Overdrive, One Of These Days, The Main Theme From More, Summer 68, and more, done in a unexpected style! Place your orders now through Amazon UK, Amazon US/International, Amazon Canada, Amazon Germany, or Amazon France.
