Syd Barrett's sister shares her memories Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Monday, 18 August 2008

Today's UK newspaper The Daily Mirror has a large piece written by Rosemary Breen, Syd Barrett's sister, sharing her memories of her brother. The article was partly inspired by preparations for The City Wakes tribute to Syd that is being staged in Cambridge, this October.

She said: "I think Roger would have found the idea of a tribute very funny. I can picture him in his armchair, reading the paper and giggling. The prospect of The City Wakes exhibition really excites me. I'm looking forward to all his old friends getting together, having a good laugh and a lot of fun while raising money for Escape Artists, who are wonderful. And it will be great to have Syd there in the background".

Alongside the various events, there will be an exhibition that will feature his artwork, previously unseen photos, and letters written by Syd, who died, aged 60, in July 2006. Breen added: "His letters, which will be on display as part of The City Wakes, show just how funny he was. He always had everybody in stitches".

David Gilmour talks of Gdansk album and possible future material Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 14 August 2008

David Gilmour has been talking to Billboard about his upcoming "Live in Gdansk" release, and talked about what possibilities may lie ahead. He told them: "The original intention was to make a live album out of the whole tour, selecting different songs from different nights, but so many of the best ones just seemed to come from that last night in Gdansk that in the end we thought, 'Oh, we'll just do the whole thing from Gdansk."

David reiterated that "the thought of going back to Pink Floyd just doesn't interest me," but hasn't ruled out future new solo material, once the Gdansk release is done and dusted. "I've got a lot of material left over from ['On An Island'], so... I've got a lot of start points. That starts to get the creative juices flowing and you start then to write new material. So it's good to have bits of music to start working on, but how many of them I will actually use and how much new stuff will come up is anyone's guess. That's in the lap of the gods."

Nick Mason canvas print raising money for charity Print E-mail

nick mason canvas print Some of you might recall that back in June 2005, we told you about www.whateverittakes.org, which had teamed up with a number of celebrities who had created unique artworks and designs for the website to sell, with the aim to raise a minimum of $3 million over three years to fund charitable projects in developing countries, contribute to the protection of the environment and other charitable causes.

One of those celebrities was Nick Mason, who crafted a very unusual, Heath Robinson-esque "Symbol of Hope" drawing (which can be seen here) akin to his cover of the Pink Floyd's "Relics" album. The good news is that Whatever It Takes have now just created a small range of 30cm x 30cm (the same size as an album sleeve) canvas prints. Of the nine designs they have chosen, Nick's is one of them! The canvases, priced at £10.99, are not only ethical products through supporting charities, but are also made in an ethically audited factory, and environmentally sound, too.

With proceeds going to 21st Century Leaders and The Prince's Trust, it is an ideal way to support their good work whilst gaining a delightful Nick Mason artwork. Visit www.whateverittakes.org to purchase yours.

Roger Waters performing at Bridgehampton this Sunday Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Wednesday, 06 August 2008

Just a reminder for you about an unique concert appearance by Roger Waters this coming Sunday - August 10th - at 6:30pm at the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival in New York, USA. Stravinsky’s “The Soldier's Tale” will be played with a roster of artists that includes none other than Roger Waters. In this piece, the second half of the concert, Roger will take the narrator’s part as well as that of the Devil and the Soldier.

Despite the venue being nice and intimate - just 360 seats - and the performance something we never expected to see from Roger, amazingly there are still tickets left for the performance. Tickets are $30-$40, and can be purchased by calling 631-537-6368.

For those who will be unable to make the journey to Bridgehampton, there is a glimmer of hope that there will be another chance to hear the performance. Each concert is recorded for later airing on American Public Radio's Performance Today. The show is carried on 250 radio stations around the USA and is heard by over 1 million listeners each week. Roger's performance will be recorded, but whether and when it makes it to air depends on a number of factors, most especially artist approval.

More info on the festival can be found at www.bcmf.org, and more info on APR's Performance Today can be found at www.performancetoday.org.
