The Miller Strat Pack concert, on 24th September 2004, featured David Gilmour alongside a whole host of top musicians at the London Wembley Arena. The concert - shot in high definition by former Hipgnosis partner, Aubrey "Po" Powell - was edited and mixed into full surround sound in David Gilmour's home studio, the Astoria houseboat, by David himself and Andy Jackson. The concert alone raised £175,000 (around US$330,000) for charity, and this was swelled with the release of the DVD (reviewed here).
The good news is that the stunning show - which also featured other legendary guitarists such as Phil Manzanera, Joe Walsh, Albert Lee and Brian May - is being released in the UK on a region-free Blu-ray disc on November 17th! Already a great DVD, the high-definition Blu-ray version should be even better, with material that had to be cut to fit onto the original DVD being added as bonus features.
These include additional tracks by Amy Winehouse and The Shadows, previously unseen rehearsal footage of Hank Marvin and David Gilmour, previously unseen interviews with Amy Winehouse and David Gilmour, along with more Strat Pack interviews and behind the scenes footage.
Amazon.co.uk are already offering it as a pre-order for despatch upon release, at a rather tempting 25% off normal retail price...

Many of you will recall Phil Manzanera's excellent, twelve-part "A is for Axe" series which was broadcast on Planet Rock radio from the start of August, 2007. The show celebrated the world's best guitarists past and present, and was essential listening.
Well, some good news! Phil returns to Planet Rock on Sunday (September 7th) for the first show in his new series, "6 Strings & A Plank Of Wood". With a focus on the art of the guitar and its role within various genres of rock music, Phil speaks to the pioneers and the purveyors of the instrument, and looks at their styles, their influences and their role in making the guitar such a popular instrument.
With analysis of the worlds of the blues, prog, art rock, and psychedelia, we'd be surprised if he didn't cover things close to the hearts of visitors to this site! The first show airs at 7pm this Sunday, and is repeated at 7pm next Friday.
For more details, visit www.PlanetRock.com.
The radio station is broadcast in the UK on DAB Digital Radio, Sky Channel 0110 and Virgin Media cable 924. They have a live stream on the internet, allowing listeners worldwide to tune in.

Starting tonight on Belgium television is a re-run of the excellent, twelve-part first series of Live From Abbey Road. An excellent showcase, focusing on the music, and the musicians, it had some of the best present-day musicians treading the boards in the hallowed London recording studio - including, of course, David Gilmour and his band.
Airing at 11:20pm (Dutch time) on Canvas Television, they are curiously kicking off things with the 11th show of the series (featuring Paul Simon, Corinne Bailey Rae and Primal Scream) which is followed next Thursday by the 10th show of the series. As a reminder, the show which featured David Gilmour was the 5th, and at the moment it is anyone's guess as to which week Canvas will be showing it, so keep an eye on local listings! If you can't wait, a 2-disc DVD was released in October 2007 with highlights of the series (more details here). Our thanks to Henk Deen for the info.
