Pink Floyd win Polar Music Prize - news wrap-up Print E-mail

polar press conference picture - sr.se With the official 2008 Polar Music Award ceremony being held in Stockholm yesterday, Roger Waters and Nick Mason have been seen all over the Swedish media. Pink Floyd were joint winners of this year's award for their contribution to popular music, alongside American soprano Renee Fleming. Roger and Nick were there to receive the award, and said that David Gilmour and Richard Wright were sorry they could not attend.

Our friend Alexander Ahlstrand has been beavering away as our media correspondent in Sweden, and with thanks to him we have details of a number of video clips, news reports, and pictures from the event for your enjoyment. First off though, if any of our Swedish visitors missed the broadcast yesterday on TV4 television, they will be broadcasting highlights of the event tonight at 10.45pm.

COMPETITION: Pink Floyd producer Norman "Hurricane" Smith book Print E-mail

john lennon called me normal As many of you will recall, legendary producer, and later recording artist in his own right, Norman "Hurricane" Smith, sadly passed away in March.

In recent years, he was working on the full publication of his memoirs, in the book "John Lennon Called Me Normal". Containing many rare pictures, much of which have not been seen before, the book contains his sharp and amusing story of working with the Beatles and Pink Floyd at Abbey Road.

As a fitting tribute to Norman, his long-awaited book has now been published through specialists Lulu.com, and we have five copies to give away to Brain Damage visitors!

roger waters on swedish tvOn the eve of the 2008 Polar Music Award ceremony, where Pink Floyd receive their award from His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Concert Hall in Stockholm, Sweden, the national television station TV4 has done a nice video preview that you can view online now.

The 13-minute special includes new interview segments from Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and David Gilmour, which are all subtitled in Swedish. Clips from the band's early days accompany the comments from the band members. View the clip at www.tv4.se. Our thanks to Thomas Gullborn for the info!

Reminders: "Pink Floyd The Wall" radio special & Polar Music Prize Print E-mail

Pink Floyd The WallWith many of us absorbed by the Olympics over the last couple of weeks or so, we thought it would be worthwhile reminding you of what's coming up in the next couple of days!

First, UK based digital radio station Planet Rock is airing "Building The Wall", a one-hour special on Pink Floyd's 1979 classic, The Wall. Broadcast tomorrow (Monday, August 25th), at 7pm BST, it promises interviews with band members, and also Gerald Scarfe, discussing his artwork for the album, stage show and film as well his time working with Pink Floyd.

The station can be heard via DAB Digital Radio, Sky Channel 0110, Cable TV channel 924 and online at www.planetrock.com, and if you forget to tune in tomorrow, you can catch the show again on Saturday, August 30th at 6pm. UPDATE: Listen on demand for the next seven days through this link!

On Tuesday (August 26th), Pink Floyd are formally awarded with the 2008 Polar Music Prize by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Concert Hall in Stockholm. More info about the award, and why Pink Floyd won it, can be seen in our news story of May 21st.

According to a press release from the organisers, it seems that Nick Mason and Roger Waters will be making the journey to Stockholm to accept the award. The ceremony will be broadcast on national television station TV4.
