Cambridge walking tour July 2010
Cambridge walking tour July 2010

Saturday saw the first of the guided walks of Syd Barrett's Cambridge, run by I-SpySydInCambridge in conjunction with Brain Damage. The walk, a tour of the city that took in many of the more significant sites which were connected to the life and times of Syd, and the various bands which lead to Pink Floyd, provided a fascinating and illuminating look at those early days.

The hosts of the tour - personal friends of Syd, who grew up with him - shared their own memories of school days and beyond with Syd, Roger, David, and other Floyd illumni who lived and worked in Cambridge. We were guided round by Warren Dosanjh (manager of Those Without), with the help of Mick Brown (who went to The Perse - the same school as David Gilmour), Dave Parker (friend of David Gilmour and a key part of the Cambridge music scene in the early 60s), and the lovely Jenny Spires (lifelong friend of Syd).

The unique insights these people gave us on the stroll around the city made the three hours fly by, with attendees absorbing the stories being shared. Click the thumbnails to the right to see some of the attendees on the day, finding out more about The Dorothy Ballroom, one of the key 1960s venues in the city.

For those that missed it, there's another opportunity - September 11th. There are 15 places available and the cost is £15.00 per person. Quite a bargain, based on Saturday's experience! Please This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , the chief guide, to book your place(s) on this tour, which should have a similar array of guest speakers. After Warren confirms your place, he will then trust you to turn up on the day and pay then. Warren said "Let's bring a little trust into this cynical world!"

The tours meets at the front of the Guildhall, Market Square and start at 10.30am, so if you will be travelling to Cambridge, make sure you give yourself enough time so that you don't miss the start. The tours are meant to last about two hours but in reality it's normally more like three hours, as the memories and stories start flowing from those who really knew Syd and the others.

Don't miss this great opportunity to discover Syd's city. For more information on the tours, the guides, and what to expect, visit their website which is www.I-SpySydInCambridge.com.

Guy Pratt's Wake Up CallAs we revealed two weeks ago, Guy Pratt, bassist for David Gilmour, and for the post-1987 Pink Floyd (amongst many others), is making his much anticipated return to the stage for a run at the legendary Edinburgh Festival.

'Guy Pratt's Wake-up Call' is the next instalment of the bizarre, poignant and often hilarious life of a professional bassist told by a natural raconteur. The show is being held at Fringe@Le Monde between August 22nd - 30th; click the thumbnail to the left for more details. Tickets are just £5, and we wholeheartedly recommend it!

However, two lucky Brain Damage visitors will each receive a pair of tickets in the latest BD competition. [UPDATE: the lucky winners have now been chosen] Read on for more details!

Roger Waters talks about gig with David Gilmour, including future appearance! Print E-mail

Roger Waters at Hoping Foundation gig - pic: Polly SamsonLate last night (UK time) Roger Waters added a posting to his Facebook page, which gave some fascinating background to the historic concert with David that took place on Saturday. Following last year's Hoping show that David did with Kate Moss, the idea was hatched to do something interesting. As Roger puts it: "What if he (David that is) were to sing the old Teddy Bears song 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' with me (Roger that is), what with us having been so famously at each other's throats for years and years. Get it!!!!"

The impetus and planning then started, culminating in the show in Oxfordshire at the weekend. However, as you'll read below, where we post the entire passage Roger has written for all those not yet on Facebook, it is not the end of the story, but "possibly [the] beginning", as David used as a bargaining chip the following: "If you do 'To Know Him Is To Love Him' for The Hoping Foundation Gig, I'll come and do 'C. Numb' on one of your Wall shows!" Cue one stunned Roger, and now the fans, all of us wondering which concert David will end up performing at (and no, he doesn't know himself which one yet!).

And now, read Roger's passage in full:

Background and more photos of Roger Waters/David Gilmour reunion Print E-mail

Polly Samson - Hoping gallery thumbnailThis afternoon, Rolling Stone have shared a little of the fascinating background to the charity performance on Saturday night by Roger Waters and David Gilmour. In their article, co-organiser of the benefit Bella Freud reveals how much the pair enjoyed the evening. "David arrived first and then Roger came on and I saw Roger give David a hug," she says. "It was really lovely."

Attempts were made to get them to perform together at a Hoping benefit show last year. "There was the possibility of something happening", Freud said. "David said he would do something and I asked Roger and he said, 'I would definitely be up for it', but he was away".

David and Roger were originally planning to play three songs. But one attendee, Arpad Busson, donated £50,000 to get them to play Another Brick in the Wall, Pt 2. "Some other people were also saying they'd give £200,000 for them to play one more song", Freud added. "People were crying — really! I know it sounds corny, but it was magic. David and Roger — they looked so happy up there and they made something so beautiful happen."

Elsewhere, if you pop over to PollySamson.com, there is a very nice selection of 19 pictures from the event in the photo gallery as the sneak preview thumbnail above shows (access the Hoping specific shots here). A great look at rehearsals and the show itself - definitely worth a visit!
