Nick Mason - happy birthday! Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 27 January 2011

Nick MasonAll of us at Brain Damage offer our heartiest best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates his 67th birthday today.

The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his father Bill, he has been a "petrol head" from a young boy, and cars have been - and remain - one of his major passions in life. His latest book, Passion for Speed, was recently published, and the first of a series of DVDs focusing on his cars (with Nick heavily involved) was released at the end of last year.

He has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and indeed three years ago became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times.

Congratulations Nick - and many happy returns!

Syd Barrett artworkThis afternoon, Syd Barrett: Art and Letters, the largest ever exhibition of Syd's artwork, has been announced. It will be held at the Idea Generation Gallery in London from 18th March to 10th April 2011.

Celebrating Syd's creative output as a visual artist the exhibition will bring together the largest and most comprehensive collection of his artworks, letters and photos to date. Revealing a lesser known side of Syd's creativity the original artworks will be exhibited alongside previously unseen photos of Syd and his band mates, and the letters he wrote to his first love Libby.

The unique exhibition will launch alongside the publication of Barrett, the definitive visual companion to the life of Syd Barrett. As with the book (which is selling quickly, so ensure you get your orders in soon), the exhibition has been organised in conjunction with the Syd Barrett Estate and in co-operation with the Barrett family. The exhibition has been produced and curated by Essential Works, Idea Generation Gallery, Will Shutes and Brian Wernham.

The Idea Generation Gallery is at 11 Chance Street, London E2 7JB, and more information can be found at their website: http://gallery.ideageneration.co.uk.

Elusive Syd Barrett cover star discovered Print E-mail

madcap_back.jpgOne of the more striking aspects of the cover of Syd Barrett's debut album, The Madcap Laughs, is the back cover of the album and Iggy the Eskimo, the mysterious naked lady towards the back of the room. There has been much speculation (and in some cases, obsession) with the story of Iggy, and in a surprising turn of events, the lady herself has just surfaced!

In an article called "The Strange Tale Of Iggy The Eskimo", online and in slightly short form in the latest issue of the UK's Mojo Magazine, Mark Blake (author of the excellent Pigs Might Fly book) relates how he was recently contacted by her, and for the first time, the truth about Iggy has been revealed.

With a real name of Evelyn, she was born in Pakistan, and the Eskimo tag was only ever a joke to an NME photographer. She maintains that it was only recently that she discovered that the photo of her naked had ended up on the cover of the release. "I went to a boot sale with my husband... When I saw the cover, I thought, Oh yes, that is my bottom."

She talks at length about the 1960s, and how she met Syd, and David Gilmour. She discusses the Mick Rock photo sessions in which she was captured on film, but reveals an air of bemusement over the interest in her: "I heard on the radio that Syd died, and I felt sad, but it was so long ago. Mick Rock took some beautiful picture of me. But, of course, I wish I'd been paid some money for them. Still, it is amazing that people have been looking for me... and that someone has even set up a website. I still don't know what to make of all this."

Guy Pratt - Adelaide Fringe Festival 2011Having wowed crowds the world over with ‘My Bass and other Animals’ and ‘Breakfast of Idiots’, Guy Pratt jets down to Australia to update Adelaide audiences on the goings on at the pointy end of the music business, and the madness that comes with breathing the rarefied air of the Superstar, including one very bizarre Argentinean trip...

The bassist for, amongst many others, Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, returns to regale music fans with more hilarious tales from the mini bar and the absurdities of life on the road for the touring musician. This is all part of the annual Adelaide Fringe Festival.

The set of dates at the slightly bizarrely named Carry On Theatre @ Gluttony, in Adelaide itself, run from Thursday, February 17th, through to Saturday, March 12th inclusive, although there are a few gaps between those dates. Full details of the shows, times, and availability at the Adelaide Fringe ticket site. Tickets are on sale now, so make sure you snap up your chosen show before they all sell!

Gerald Scarfe - The Making of Pink Floyd The WallFor all of you still to purchase it, despite our recent exclusives regarding Gerald Scarfe's "The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall", including the set of three special video interviews with Gerald, for Brain Damage, we have a possible temptation for you!

"The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall" is the incredible, authorized and definitive book about the project and includes new commentaries from the surviving members of Pink Floyd: Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason, together with the director of the film, Sir Alan Parker. Roger Waters has written the foreword. The album imagery, stage performances and film were created in close collaboration with Gerald Scarfe, and his massive archive includes original storyboards, animation cells, concept drawings, models and other three-dimensional material together with photographs of the creation and staging of the live performances and the filming of The Wall.

In the book, Gerald also relates his own experiences of working with the band from the early days of Wish You Were Here to the Pros and Cons Of Hitchhiking with Roger Waters, after his break with the other band members, as well as his work for the new live show of The Wall.

Amazon have secured a limited number of these books, personally signed by Gerald Scarfe, and you can order your copy of this from Amazon UK, Amazon US/International, Amazon Canada, Amazon France, or Amazon Germany. These signed editions will naturally be very limited, so if you are tempted by this, we would suggest you act quickly to make sure of your copy.
