Dark Side Of The Moon documentary DVD Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 08 May 2003

This morning, Brain Damage got its first look at the forthcoming DVD release of the recent BBC "Classic Albums" broadcast.

The rights to releasing all episodes of this series reside with Eagle Vision, who are also the producers of the programme. As mentioned previously, the Pink Floyd/Dark Side Of The Moon episode was an absolute cracker.

Filled with new interviews with Roger, David, Richard and Nick, and lots of previously unseen and unheard material (early demos of tracks, the Floyd performing On The Run live in Brighton, 1972, and more), the program was a feast for the eyes and ears. This release, on DVD and VHS video, will ensure that Floyd fans worldwide will get to see it (legitimately).

We are still awaiting confirmation of the final release dates from our contacts at Eagle, but at the moment it is looking like June 30th for the UK and Europe, and sometime in the Autumn/Fall for the US and Canada. As we get more information on this, so will you!

Pink Floyd on US radio Print E-mail

A station on the XM Satellite Radio service in the US will be airing three hours worth of Floyd special on Sunday, May 11th, beginning at 12 noon Eastern Time. The station is XM 168, called XM Live. The first two hours are titled "Echoes - A History Of Pink Floyd, parts 1 and 2", and the third hour is simply called "Pink Floyd '73".

There are no specific details of what will be included in each of the shows, but the radio station devotes its airtime to live material... Our thanks to Jeff Truax for the heads-up on this one.

UPDATE, May 19th: Michael Soucy has been in contact with us - he caught this broadcast, but sadly the 1973 section was just the same old 1970/71 BBC stuff, including the long version of Atom Heart Mother.

BBC's Pink Floyd extravaganza Print E-mail

Saturday night saw two great BBC productions - firstly, the History of Psychedelia documentary (part 1) which had one or two nice surprises in it, including an interview with Roger Waters.

The BIG event was the fifty minute TV documentary, "Classic Albums" which covered DSOTM. Every track was profiled from its beginnings through its creation, with interviews conducted with all four members of the band, together with Chris Thomas (mix supervisor) and Alan Parsons, original engineer.

With the exception of Nick, the rest of the band all recreated key segments of the songs as solo pieces, and also we got to see some GREAT footage, such as "The Travel Section" (On The Run) performed live in Brighton 1972 (colour footage of this!!!). With demo's of some of the songs also played, it really was a fantastic production. Nothing from the EPK was shown; it is not yet known if this will be what the forthcoming DVD will offer. A great show - well done, BBC!

Cracked Dark Side Of The Moon SACDs? Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 01 May 2003

The excellent audiophile website High Fidelity Review have been following a breaking news story that has appeared in the newsgroups about the new SACD of Dark Side Of The Moon. It seems that a small number of US copies have displayed cracks, starting from the centre of the disc and radiating outward. This fault also affects a handful of other SACD titles, all of which have been pressed up at the Crest National plant in Hollywood, California.

You can identify these pressings by studying the master numbers on the inner rings of the disc (S26713-C on the outer ring, and S26713-H on the inner ring). HFR have discussed this at length with Crest National and they have done accelerated aging testing, showing that these cracks seem to be purely cosmetic and do not affect playing. If you have a Crest National version of the disc (and it seems only a small batch made there are affected) we suggest you swing over to HFR for more details.

Big Floyd feature in UK's Uncut Magazine Print E-mail

The new issue, dated June 2003, of the UK's Uncut magazine was published today, and it includes much to excite the Floyd fan!

Apart from the lovely, unusual picture of the band on the cover, the other first thing spotted is the free CD of psychedelic classics. Now, some of the songs included are better than others, but it is notable for including Syd performing "Octopus". The eighteen track CD has had a redesign since the original announcement (which we posted a month ago) and is now called "Acid Daze". Other artists on it include The Nice, The Small Faces, Kevin Ayers, The Move, T Rex, Arthur Brown and The Purple Gang with the legendary "Granny Takes A Trip".

The magazine itself features large interviews with each of the members of Pink Floyd, conducted separately. Apart from the cover picture, and a nice shot on the index page, it also has a whopping twenty three pages of new interviews and pictures of Roger, David, Rick and Nick.

It also has a somewhat scathing "review" of a 1980 Earl's Court Wall show, by Alan Jones. The same Alan Jones that Roger refers to on stage, during one of those shows, for his less than flattering review in the Melody Maker at the time of the shows!

Overall, the magazine is a definite recommendation - snap it up if you can.
