Major new Storm Thorgerson exhibition - one week to go Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Tuesday, 30 March 2010

Let Your Hair Down... Preparations are being made for the opening next week, on April 2nd, of a month long exhibition at Idea Generation Gallery in London that we told you about at the start of the month. "Storm Thorgerson: Right But Wrong - The Extended Album Art of StormStudios and Hipgnosis" looks at some of the events, exstallations, sculptures, images, drawings, and ideas behind Storm's 42+ year career. This retrospective is not only an exhibition of Storm's most celebrated covers for the likes of Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, but also offers a unique insight into the otherworldly and incongruous work Storm is carrying out today.

Alongside some of the most iconic images from his seminal career, the exhibition will include previously unseen sculptures, sketches and writings from Storm. Especially for Idea Generation Gallery, Storm will present a number of brand new site-specific installations, including ambitious reinterpretations of a few of his most renowned pieces, and a programme of special events including live body painting, workshops and a psychoanalytic investigation of Storm's motives. Blimey!

Watch out for our special report from the launch evening which takes place next Thursday, with the public opening taking place the following day. The exhibition runs until May 2nd 2010, the gallery is at 11 Chance Street, London E2, and is open from Monday to Friday, 10am - 6pm, and at the weekend between 12pm - 5pm. Syd Barrett Memorial Walk - one week to go Print E-mail

Syd on a cross-channel ferry in 1967 with Pink Floyd (© Pink Floyd Music Ltd.)Back on February 20th, we told you that a group of Syd Barrett fans and associates of Escape Artists will be walking from London to Cambridge to raise money for the Syd Barrett Fund - a distance of some 60 miles. When Syd left London and returned home to Cambridge at the beginning of the eighties he decided to walk the whole way, and next weekend the Syd Barrett Memorial Walk will take place to commemorate that.

If you would like to support the team of walkers then please visit www.justgiving.com/sydbarrettwalk. Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it's the most efficient way to donate - they raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

To keep up with the activity of the Syd Barrett Fund, read their blog, or follow them on Twitter at www.twitter.com/sydbarrettfund.

Nick Mason denies Pink Floyd/Wizard of Oz rumour (again) Print E-mail

Nick Mason on The One ShowFriday night's "One Show" on the UK's BBC1 TV had an article showcasing the forthcoming Wizard of Oz musical and the talent show which will find the lead actress (and Toto, too). As part of the feature, they note that one of the oddest rumours around the film is the supposed link between Pink Floyd's 1973 album, The Dark Side of the Moon, and the 1939 movie.

Cue Nick Mason [click thumbnail, right], sitting behind a drumkit in his office: "It's unthinkable that we would have felt that it was really important to work with Judy Garland, and devise an album based on that particular story. So I have to say that sadly, both the tin man, and the straw man, and all the rest of it, had absolutely zero to do with that particular record!"

Those of you in certain countries will be able to catch it on the BBC's iPlayer service until the evening of Friday, April 2nd. Our thanks to Byron Lewis for the info.

Exhibition at 2010 Syd Barrett festival - items wanted Print E-mail

Sunday, 28 March 2010

As we mentioned back on January 26th, The Idea Generation Gallery (IGG) has announced that an exhibition of Syd Barrett's art and letters will be held in London in spring 2011. There will be associated music, film and talk events. Planning is well underway, and you can register to be kept informed by visiting gallery.ideageneration.co.uk and registering. The organisers hope to announce exact dates by the end of December.

This exhibition of art, photography and letter will be bigger and better than the last "Syd Barrett - The City Wakes" held in Cambridge - not only do the organisers again have the support of Syd's sister, Rosemary, but also they have pledges from several old friends of Syd's and art owners to show previously unseen pieces. They also have pledges to loan two considerable collections of letters.

However, the intention is to mount the most comprehensive display of Syd's work, and also, with the expert input of Will Shutes (assistant editor at "The London Magazine"), to provide some serious art interpretation. There will be twice the gallery space as previously, and will be using more innovative and attractive display techniques as well. This should be a real treat!

They've had some people contact them since our last appeal, but have asked more of you for your help...

Limited edition Syd Barrett bookAnnounced this evening is "Barrett", a new book which the publishers describe as "the definite visual companion to the creative work of Roger 'Syd' Barrett". A limited edition, high quality, large-format book, it focuses on the creative life of Syd. We've had a special preview of a number of the images to be included, and we are certain that this will be an absolutely essential book for all fans of Syd Barrett and the early Pink Floyd. It's a mesmerizing selection of pictures, not just Syd's artwork and letters (incredible in themselves), but rare photos including live, backstage, and portrait images, and endearing family snapshots – a collection the like of which has not been seen before.
