Written by Wayne Shelor
Tuesday, 22 December 2009

Flaming Lips' cover of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the MoonToday (December 22nd, 2009) sees the iTunes release of the somewhat unexpectedly titled "The Flaming Lips and Stardeath and White Dwarfs With Henry Rollins and Peaches Doing the Dark Side of the Moon" - yes, that is the complete and correct title, of the re-recording and reimagining of Pink Floyd's 1973 classic!

This labour of love recording is a collaboration between The Flaming Lips, Stardeath and White Dwarfs With Henry Rollins and Peaches, and at the moment is designated as a digital download only. For those who chose other download sites for their music, you'll have to wait until December 29th for your opportunity.

In the meantime, click the thumbnail for the suitably freaky cover art!

Two new Pink Floyd books on the horizon Print E-mail

With thoughts now turning to what 2010 will bring, publishers are clearly getting ready to keep the fans busy with a couple of new Pink Floyd titles announced.

Pink Floyd Illustrated Biography"Pink Floyd: Illustrated Biography (Classic Rare & Unseen)" by Gareth Thomas is a hardback from Transatlantic Press which is due to appear on June 1st, 2010. As yet we have little information on this, other than it is a large-format, 224-page book, including "a unique collection of 200 classic, rare and unseen photographs" between its covers. Picture books of the band always prove popular, so we know some of you will be placing your orders with Amazon UK, Amazon.com, Amazon Canada, Amazon Germany, or Amazon France.

Pink Floyd comicAll five issues of the Rock 'N' Roll Comics series The Pink Floyd Experience have been out of print and in demand for over fifteen years. As showcased in Pink Floyd's own official box CD set Shine On, the Floyd comics chronicle the band's story. With art by Marvel and DC star Ken Landgraf (Wolverine, Hawkman, Nightwing & Flamebird), this 240-page collection, to be published May 29th, 2010, is said to also include updated material, bringing the saga up to 2010. Some liked the comics, others hated them - for the former, or those who are curious, you can pre-order them at Amazon UK, Amazon.com, Amazon Canada, Amazon Germany, or Amazon France.

David Gilmour's website gets impressive new look Print E-mail

New David Gilmour websiteDavid Gilmour's official website has just launched its new look, and very impressive it is too. With a lot of Flash-based widgets used, it is a colourful, and active site to look at - with a nice in-concert laser effect sitting behind David and his signature black Strat. Click the thumbnail to the left for a closer look - or indeed pop over to www.DavidGilmour.com to experience it fully!

In terms of existing content, this is all still there, but will some upgraded methods of presentation (for example, in the picture section). As yet, his blog site hasn't been changed in line with the main site, although this was of course visually (and operationally) upgraded not so long ago.

Roger Waters joins Gaza Freedom March Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Friday, 18 December 2009

On December 31st, more than a thousand people from 42 countries around the world - including Roger Waters - will join an estimated 50,000 Gazans in a historical march to break the siege of Gaza. The date will mark the one-year anniversary since the beginning of the three-week attack on Gaza (as a retaliatory move) that left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead, 100,000 homeless, and agricultural land destroyed.

For more information on the march, and the campaign, visit www.GazaFreedomMarch.org.

UPDATE: Roger has issued the following for the campaign:

A message of solidarity with THE GAZA FREEDOM MARCH by Roger Waters
27 December 2009

My name is Roger Waters. I am an English musician living in the USA. I am writing to express my great admiration for and solidarity with the 1360 men and women from 42 different countries around the World who are gathering in Egypt, preparing for The Gaza Freedom March. We all watched, aghast, the vicious attack made a year ago on the people of Gaza by Israeli armed forces and the ongoing illegal siege. The suffering wrought on the population of Gaza by both the invasion and the siege is unimaginable to us outside the walls. The aim of The Freedom March is to focus world attention on the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza in the hope that the scales will fall from the eyes of all, ordinary, decent people round the world, that they may see the enormity of the crimes that have been committed, and demand that their governments bring all possible pressure to bear on Israel to lift the siege.

I use the word 'crimes' advisedly, as both the siege and the invasion have been declared unlawful by United Nations bodies and leading human rights organizations. If we do not all observe international law, if some governments think themselves above it, it is but a few short, dark, steps to barbarism and anarchy.

The Gaza Freedom March is a beacon to all those of us who believe that under the skin, we are all brothers and sisters, who must stand shoulder to shoulder, if we are to make a future where all have recourse to law and universal human rights. Where life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is not just the preserve of the few. All the oil in The Middle East is not worth one child's life. So to those of you who march, I tip my hat. It is a brave and noble thing you do, and when you reach your goal please tell our Palestinian brothers and sisters, that out here, beyond the Walls of their Prison, stand hundreds of thousands of us in solidarity with them. Today, hundreds of thousands, tomorrow, millions, soon, hundreds of millions.

We Shall Overcome.

'a Ira Moed' - Roger's opera returns to Holland Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 17 December 2009

Ca Ira MoedSome of you will recall that last year, on May 5th, 2008, there was a special performance of Ça Ira, the opera by Roger Waters. The event took place on Dutch Liberation Day, and was a very special, full-scale staging of the opera in the largest concert hall in Holland, with all proceeds from the event going to the War Child charity.

With the tragic and brutal death last month of the 14-year-old son of André Post, one of the soloists in "Ça Ira for Warchild", the organiser of the original show, Joke Tuinema, decided to bring Ça Ira back to the stage again. This time not for the benefit of War Child, but for the 'Moed' campaign [see www.moed.nl]. Moed means "courage", and the campaign takes a stand against senseless violence against others.

Exact details are currently being worked out, but it is looking to be either November or December 2010. All the same musicians are back, and joining them is one of the most famous conductors in Holland, Maurice Luttikhuis.

More details of the Foundation Ça Ira Moed, and the concert, will be on www.CaIraMoed.nl.
