Jon Carin - happy birthday! Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Thursday, 21 October 2010

jon carinOur hearty congratulations to Jon Carin, who today celebrates his 46th birthday (Thursday, October 21st).

The talented multi-instrumentalist has been a key part of the Pink Floyd operation since 1985, and more recently toured with David Gilmour (on his On An Island tour), and Roger Waters (on his Dark Side Of The Moon tour). He is currently a key member of Roger's band for the 110-date Wall tour of North America and Europe, playing keyboards and more during the show, which has wowed sell-out crowds in the US and Canada.

For those who might have missed it, or want another chance to read it, check out our extensive and exclusive interview with Jon from August 2007. It's full of fascinating insights into his life and work with various top musicians, including (of course) David, Roger, and Pink Floyd!

With the current lull in activity from the above, Jon has been keeping himself busy, and recently with GE Smith (who is also on The Wall tour, of course) produced an album for GE's wife. Taylor Barton. More details, and track samples, from Amazon or iTunes.

Have a great day, Jon - and many happy returns!

Nick MasonOn Sunday morning's Kate Silverton show on BBC Radio 5 Live, Kate interviewed Nick Mason about a range of subjects - with the pair even touching on the hopes of a release of rarities next year!

The fascinating interview, which can be heard for the next few days through this link, kicked off with talk of Nick being recognised (or not) in the street, through to the beginnings of the band, and quickly on to the suggestion of a reunion show. He made it clear that there are no plans at the moment, but that they were keen on another event such as Live 8. He added that "what would be great would be to go back and do the full show."

With the interview tying in with the publication of Nick's new book, Passion For Speed, the conversation turned quickly to cars. Some interesting insights came out from their chat, even touching on the choices of vehicle for various school runs.

On the basis of the feedback we've had from his Edinburgh shows, these are appearances you won't want to miss!

The London show is on Friday (October 22nd) at the 20th Century Theatre. Doors open at 7:30pm, with pizza available during the intermission, and a late bar until midnight. Our friends in and around Manchester will have to wait until Saturday (October 23rd), when Guy arrives at the Engine House, for a show that's part of the Manchester Comedy Festival. Doors open for this show at 9:15pm, with the show starting at 9:30pm. Both shows are for over-18s only as alcohol will be on sale in the venues.

Sir Alan Parker reveals pain of Pink Floyd's The Wall Print E-mail

Sir Alan Parker, Brighton 18th October 2010Last night Sir Alan Parker, the director of Pink Floyd's The Wall, the 1982 film starring Bob Geldof and based on the group's classic album, made a very rare special appearance at The Space event, held at the Komedia in Brighton, England. The Space is a monthly music, film and arts event, which features a line-up of highly successful special guest interviewees from the creative industries.

Sir Alan is one of Britain's most successful filmmakers, which made for a fascinating evening. In a career spanning forty years, he has worked with some of the movie world's most respected actors, such as Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Nicolas Cage and Gene Hackman, on films such as Fame, The Commitments, Midnight Express, Bugsy Malone and Birdy. Music has been a key theme throughout much of his work, and he has collaborated with Pink Floyd (The Wall), legendary producer Giorgio Moroder (Midnight Express), Madonna and Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita). As an active figure within the British film industry, Parker was a co-founder of the Directors Guild of Great Britain and the UK Film Council, and he is a former Chairman of the British Film Institute. His work with all these, and more, was covered in some detail with some pretty frank and honest revelations.

Pink Floyd The Wall was something he seemed to shy away from mentioning until the Q&A at the end, when he was asked directly about it. He said that was his "most miserable professional experience" but followed this up by affirming that "I'm proud of it"! He talked of "how painful it was to put it on screen" but noted that he is good friends with David Gilmour and Nick Mason due to the film (not the case, though, with Roger Waters!). He also revealed that noted director Christopher Nolan played Pink Floyd The Wall to his team just prior to starting work on his movie, Inception.

Bryan Ferry - OlympiaBack in July, we told you about the new Bryan Ferry studio album, "Olympia", which is to be released on October 25th, and includes musical contributions from the likes of Nile Rodgers, Groove Armada, Scissor Sisters, Flea, Jonny Greenwood, and David Gilmour. It also sees Bryan reunited on record with members of Roxy Music, including Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, and Andy Mackay, for the first time since "For Your Pleasure" in 1973.

Named after the area of London where his studio is situated, "Olympia" comes in four different editions, as detailed below (along with ordering details). To get a great taste of the album, you can hear "Song To The Siren" online now, through this site, and after you've given it a listen (and it's a great track - Gilmour's guitar to the fore, alongside that classic Roxy sound), check out this "Making Of Olympia" video, which has just been released, and shows the musicians (including David) in the studio recording "Siren":
