Yesterday, Roland Petit, the world-renowned choreographer sadly passed away, aged 87. Well known for the wide ranging and creative nature of his projects, Pink Floyd fans will be familiar with his work due to the series of Floyd Ballets that they worked on together.
"It all began in the late '60s," explained Petit, the ballet's creator. "One day, my daughter, who must have been about 10 years old at the time, gave me an album by Pink Floyd and said, 'Dad, you have to make a ballet with this music. It's the best!' At first I was hesitant, but when I heard the music, I agreed with my daughter. So I went to England and met with Pink Floyd in person. I told them about my idea of making a ballet with their music and asked if they would agree. They were so enthusiastic about the idea that they even offered to play live at the world premiere!"
The premier performance took place in November 1972 with Pink Floyd themselves playing live before 32,000 spectators at the Palais des Sports in Marseilles. Since then, it has been presented around the globe, with great success - most recently in 2010. The following video gives a flavour of the original performances:

The website Superdeluxeedition have had an exclusive, if brief, preview of Pink Floyd's forthcoming Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall Immersion box sets recently, and have posted their thoughts on what they heard.
The preview took place on Astoria, David Gilmour's houseboat studio, with engineer Andy Jackson and studio manager and guitar tech Phil Taylor. Gems they heard included the original 1972 mix of The Great Gig in the Sky (featuring a man's voice shouting from a megaphone, and is apparently quite heavy on the Hammond Organ), Wish You Were Here featuring Stephane Grappelli, and the "Work In Progress" version of Another Brick in the Wall (Part One). Once you've checked out their notes, find out full details of ALL the releases along with ordering details, here.
An official Q&A with Nick Mason has also taken place, and excerpts have been running on the Floyd's Facebook page regularly. They've now posted the full Q&A on the Floyd's Youtube channel.

Starting tomorrow night at Thinktank Planetarium, part of Birmingham's Science Museum, are a series of special Pink Floyd evenings.
The focus of each evening, which promise atmospheric 360 degree dome visuals alongside the music
from the albums, is devoted to a specific release:
- The Wall - on July 8th and September 17th
- Wish You Were Here - July 22nd, August 12th, September 3rd
- The Dark Side Of The Moon - August 5th, 20th, and 26th
The shows are suitable for ages 12+.
Entrance is by advance ticket only, which can be ordered through this link.
As part of the event, our friends over at Birmingham's St Paul's Gallery will be exhibiting there. They own the world's
largest collection of signed album cover fine art, including rare and very rare Floyd music and
concert artefacts. A number of these items will be on display, and on sale, mainly specific to the
album being performed that evening, which should make the events even more interesting.

Today marks the very sad fifth anniversary of Syd Barrett's passing away. I'm sure we will all mark the day with our memories and thoughts of Syd, in our own special way.
In the new issue of the UK's Clash Magazine, there's a large article on Syd, incorporating an interview with Mick Rock, who was a friend of Syd's and took a large number of photographs of him, in particular the 1969 photo shoot for Syd's debut solo album, 'The Madcap Laughs'.
The magazine is now available in UK stores, or alternatively, you can read the whole article online at Clashmusic.com. Our thanks to Jason Pyke for the information on this article.
