David Gilmour articles feature heavily in new guitar mag Print E-mail
Written by Matt

i Guitar magazineJust launched is Guitar Interactive, a free, digital magazine which will be of interest to budding guitarists worldwide - and the first issue (online now) heavily features David Gilmour's techniques and abilities.

The magazine takes avantage of its medium by including, alongside the article text, video tutorials to guide people through the concepts raised. The first issue runs to around 120 pages, and the publishers say that there's almost five hours of video content.

With David taking the lion's share of attention, you can read about his lead guitar style, an analysis of his success, his slide guitar skills, his "rhythm technique" explained (!), his blues playing examined, and to top it all off there's a review of the "David Gilmour Relic" edition of the Fender Black Strat. Check it all out now at www.iguitarmag.com/issue1.

The Valley - Obscured By Clouds Blu-ray and DVD packageAt long last, the striking second feature from Barbet Schroeder - La Vallee/The Valley (Obscured by Clouds) - has had its UK release on DVD, and, for the first time anywhere, on Blu-ray this week.

Released by the BFI (British Film Institute) on Monday (February 14th), in a Dual Format Edition package, the movie explores the limits of experience as it journeys into the great unknown accompanied by Pink Floyd's wondrous soundtrack, later released as the album Obscured By Clouds. Check out our review here.

Previously unavailable in the UK on DVD, the Dual Format Edition release (a Blu-ray and a DVD disc in the same box) includes a range of special features including three documentary shorts directed by Barbet Schroeder about aspects of the lives of the tribes of Papua New Guinea, and a new director-approved 'optical effect' digitally-restored optional ending.

The Blu-ray (which is not region-locked and therefore suitable for worldwide use) includes a Director-approved High Definition transfer from the original negative, and the package includes theatrical trailers for Schroeder's The Valley, More (1969, also featuring a Pink Floyd soundtrack) and Maîtresse (1974). There's also an illustrated 26-page booklet with rare on-set photographs, an essay: "Childhood's End: Pink Floyd's Music for The Valley (Obscured by Clouds)" by Rob Young, and an essay and new director interview.

We had one copy to give away, thanks to the BFI, in another great BD competition. From the many entries submitted, Dave Carlin from Sheffield, UK, was the lucky person picked out the BD hat and will get his own copy soon. For all of you not so fortunate, you can order the package now from the following, saving up to 35% off the recommended retail price: Amazon.co.uk, Play.com, and Zavvi.com. You can also order it directly from www.bfi.org.uk/filmstore.

Guy PrattAs you know, having wowed crowds the world over with 'My Bass and other Animals' and 'Breakfast of Idiots', Guy jets down to Australia to update audiences on the goings on at the pointy end of the music business, and the madness that comes with breathing the rarefied air of the Superstar, including one very bizarre Argentinean trip...

The bassist for, amongst many others, Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, returns to regale music fans with more hilarious tales from the mini bar and the absurdities of life on the road for the touring musician. And, thanks to the man himself, we had two pairs of tickets to any of his shows to win in the latest Brain Damage competition!

Here's where and when you can catch Guy's show:

  • 16th Feb - 12th March Adelaide Fringe @ Gluttony, 10.15pm (9.30 Wed & Sundays) Tickets here
  • 13th April - 24th April Melbourne International Comedy Festival at the Hi Fi Club, 7pm (6pm Sundays). Details here shortly
  • 26th - 30th April Sydney Comedy Festival at The Factory, 9pm. Details here shortly
  • 1st - 17th May, MICF Roadshow (venues still to be confirmed; the full programme to be available here from February 16th)

The lucky winners, each of whom get a pair of tickets for the show and venue of their choice, are: Steve Harris, from the Victoria area, and Martin Eade, from Perth. Well done to these two, and better luck next time to all those who weren't so fortunate...

Roger Waters in Jam Magazine, February 2011To follow up on our story on Thursday about the Spanish publication, This Is Rock, Roger Waters also crops up in Italian monthly magazine "Jam". Their February 2011 issue (number 178) devotes its cover and 12 pages to a nice, long feature on Roger's The Wall Live European tour. The magazine is now on sale through normal outlets, and costs €5. Our thanks to Alberto from Heyou for the info.

In the UK, the latest issue of well respected magazine The Word (cover date March 2011, issue 97) includes a large and fascinating interview with Elton John. Within the interview, he talks about how tough it is being part of a band. "Look at Pink Floyd - that is an absolute tragedy that they can't play together. Their lovely drummer - Nick Mason - I was with him at Elizabeth Hurley's wedding and he was talking about the gig they were going to play in Hyde Park and as he told me about it he cried. He said he'd been waiting for that day for so long. Because of two people within the band they can't work and that is monstrous. They are one of the greatest bands of all time."

The magazine is in stores now, and available in selected outlets worldwide as an import.
