As birthday parties go, this one sounded a cracker! Friday (April 27th) saw a special celebration of Polly Samson's 50th birthday, and as revealed on her Twitter feed, the evening saw her husband, David Gilmour, put on a special celebration for her.
Held at the 20th Century Theatre in London's Notting Hill, the party - in front of 150 guests (amongst others, Ringo Starr, Jeff Beck and Nick Mason) - included a live band which we now know (thanks to one of the band members) consisted of Phil Manzanera, Guy Pratt, Andy Newmark on drums, Paddy Milner on keyboards, and David himself. Polly tweeted that "It was such a shock! I had no idea he'd rehearsed the band and written a song. Dark horse but lovely one. x "
Polly also tweeted the setlist, which makes for interesting reading: Smile / The Blue / This Heaven / Where We Start / High Hopes / the aforementioned new song... Obviously, as a private party, it is extremely unlikely that we'll see or hear any of the performances (to save you asking!) but if any is officially released, we'll let you know. Our thanks to Werner at Pulse & Spirit for help with this info. And, our congrats to Polly on her special birthday!
BBC Radio 4, in conjunction with John Harris (author of the DSOTM book), explore the tragic breakdown of Syd Barrett, and how his fellow band members and family coped, in a repeat airing of a programme originally broadcast in June 2011.
The Twilight World Of Syd Barrett airs again tomorrow (Thursday, May 3rd) at 11pm -
11:30pm. Band members reveal the concerns they had when he began to go
catatonic on-stage, playing music that had little to do with their
material, or not playing at all. By spring 1968 Barrett was out of the
group but he re-emerged in 1970 with a pair of albums, which failed to
chart. Barrett retired to a hermit-like existence under the watchful
gaze of his sister Rosemary.
The programme includes interviews with Rosemary, as well as David
Gilmour and Nick Mason, plus one of Rick Wright's final interviews
before he died. Band members describe how there was then little
understanding of mental illness and that steps taken to help him might
not have been appropriate.
BBC Radio 4 can be heard on FM and DAB radio, digital cable, satellite
and freeview, and via the BBC website where they have their "Listen
Live" and "Listen Again" facilities, allowing you to hear the broadcasts
for up to seven days following transmission. Our thanks to Malcolm Walker for tipping us off about this show's repeat airing.
The documentary is a short, but interesting look at the background to the project. There's a segment talking about how a missing piano piece by Richard Wright was investigated, and you hear this piece highlit on the soundtrack. Elsewhere, Storm Thorgerson talks about the packaging for the new edition, and explains how they came up with the idea to return the original pictures to the elements represented. So, the picture of the burning man gets burnt itself, the splashless diver picture is itself under water, and so on.
You can view the documentary on Youtube, and we've also embedded it here:
To celebrate the upcoming 30th anniversary of the motion picture 'Pink Floyd: The Wall', on-set stills photographer David Appleby is honouring the fans of the acclaimed visual rock masterpiece, with an exhibition of stunning behind-the-scenes images taken during the production of 'The Wall'.
On display, there will be over 40 traditionally and painstakingly hand-printed black and white silver gelatin prints from the original negatives, by Silverbase of The Photographic Centre which is within the legendary Pinewood Studios - where some of the film was shot. Other images are due to be displayed too.
Brain Damage has had an exclusive preview of the pictures involved, and we know that those who are able to attend will be in for a treat. There are some wonderful, intimate moments, along with iconic moments from the production but from a unique perspective. Most have never been seen before, having been discovered lurking in a store room at Pinewood since they were originally shot.
The exhibition will be at Blackall Studios in Shoreditch, London, between July 13th-18th, shortly before the 2012 Olympics hit the capital. The private view of the exhibition will strive to raise plenty of cash for the charity "Medicinema", and to get fans worldwide involved, Indigogo is doing a fund raiser to put on the exhibition. Every donation towards the exhibition will get various special (and exclusive) rewards, such as prints, posters, and the exhibition catalogue signed by David Appleby. Should the exhibition be a success, plans are to take it worldwide. Any galleries interested should get in contact with us and we'll pass on your details!
We'll keep you fully updated on this exhibition, and will be reporting from the opening evening. Watch this space...
