Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon voted 'Best Album Cover' Print E-mail

MusicRadar.com have just published the results of a survey of musicians and rock fans, declaring Pink Floyd's 1973 album The Dark Side Of The Moon as having the "Greatest Album Cover of All Time". Storm Thorgerson's deceptively simple and striking image was just one of a number of the Floyd's cover which featured in the poll.

Beating Nirvana's Nevermind and The Beatles' Sgt Pepper's into second and third places respectively, the Floyd also feature elsewhere in the top 10, with 1977's Animals. Will Groves, editor of MusicRadar.com, said: "The Dark Side Of The Moon is conclusive proof that one simple, enduring image is the winning formula when it comes to album artwork, particularly when it's harnessed to such an iconic musical work. Any of the top 10 would have been worthy winners but the Floyd cover is a welcome reminder of a time when sleeve art meant much more than a jpeg a couple of hundred pixels wide in your iTunes library."

Roger Waters joined by David Gilmour & Nick Mason at London's O2 Arena Print E-mail

Roger Waters, Nick Mason and David Gilmour - London O2 Arena, May 12th 2011Putting all the speculation and rumour to bed, tonight was the night that saw David Gilmour repaying the favour to Roger after he took part in the Hoping Foundation charity event last year, by performing a stunning Comfortably Numb atop the wall at London's O2 Arena.

Rumours that he'd be bringing his guitar work to Run Like Hell proved unfounded, but if the crowd thought that they'd seen the last of David, Outside The Wall proved them wrong! Making for a very moving sight, David and Roger greeted each other as Roger thanked him for taking part. Then, to add further to the special nature of the night, Nick Mason was called to join them. As you'll see from the pictures and video clips on the May 12th show page (click here), Roger played his trusty trumpet, David a mandolin, and Nick a tamborine!

The morning following the show, the BBC's Breakfast TV programme covered the event, and many of you will be able to view Colin Paterson's Wall feature on the BBC website on demand.

Nick Mason talks about mammoth Pink Floyd reissue campaign Print E-mail

Nick Mason

A pair of interviews have been published today with Nick Mason, talking about the massive Pink Floyd reissue programme that was announced this week.

The first of these, with Reuters news agency, was conducted at the Hollywood EMI office, with Nick saying that "There is a slight sense that we are coming to the end of the period where people will buy the physical record with all the packaging and the information and so on. I think it's really important to try and have a last go at that, because if we do end up just downloading everything from now on it would be a shame if there wasn't on record all that good artwork and the things that went with it". Elsewhere in the interview, which you can read here, Nick talks of his pleasure that the Stephane Grappelli guest appearance was found and will be on the Wish You Were Here package. Mason also said he planned to attend the London stop of Waters "The Wall" world tour on Thursday.

The other interview appears in Rolling Stone, where Nick reveals that the earliest material proved the biggest draw for him, particular tracks that emerged "from the very back of the cupboard". When the subject turns to Roger Waters, he said: "I hate to say this, because Roger is insufferable already, but his writing is extraordinary. The lyrics to Dark Side were written by a 20-something-year-old guy, but they're relevant to a 50- or 60-year-old guy. 'Time' or any of those songs have lasted extremely well. And the music has an abstraction to it that allows people to put their own visions on it. The songs leave a lot of scope for people to use their imaginations, paint their own pictures and make it a soundtrack to their thoughts and their lives. And you're most susceptible to that when you're a teenager". The full interview is online here.

Roger Waters tour interviews, and additional Greek concert Print E-mail

With Roger Waters' production of The Wall arriving in UK today, with the first of six shows at London's O2 Arena, we start with some good news for those attending next week. The planned tube strike has been averted, meaning those using public transport to get to/from the O2 should be fine. For the London shows, more than 95 pupils from 12 secondary schools across the Tower Hamlets borough will join Roger on stage for Another Brick in the Wall.

Yesterday saw Roger's show in Athens, Greece on July 8th go on sale, and sold out within minutes. A second night there - July 9th - has now gone on sale, and this show concludes the European tour (assuming no more are added). To tie in with these Greek concerts, Roger is interviewed on the DidiMusic site.

Talking of interviews, the Independent newspaper (UK) today publishes a chat they had with Roger. A fairly short interview, with the normal explanations of the relevance of The Wall today.

A much longer, and very interesting, interview appeared over the weekend courtesy of the Irish Independent. In this, Roger looks back at his very earliest days, and the fears he had that, as a baby, he had killed his father. "After umpteen years of therapy," Roger admitted, "I finally realised that a recurrent dream I had where I was terrified that I had murdered someone and I was going to get caught... I stopped having that dream when I realised I thought I had killed my father when I was a tiny baby. Because it is well known that children always feel responsible for their parents' divorce and they feel responsible, if they are young enough, for the death of a parent. Infants and very young children, because they are feel they are the centre of the universe, tend to take responsibilities..."
