Written by Matt

Pink Floyd Sampler CD from Best BuyAs Brain Damage regulars will know, often we hold a competition at the end of the year, giving away some hopefully interesting prizes. As 2011 comes to a close, we thought we'd better keep the tradition going, and hopefully provide you with a bit of fun working out the answers to our questions, some of which are quite tricky.

This year, we have the quiz-setting talents of Martin Kilbride to thank. Martin came up with the questions you'll see below, all of which are based around Pink Floyd, their music, and related stuff. We have some nice prizes on offer, for the winners:

  • Dark Side Of The Moon Experience edition
  • Wish You Were Here Experience edition
  • Limited edition Best Buy (US) exclusive "Pink Floyd Sampler" CD
  • Exclusive promo Why Pink Floyd? t-shirts (size large)

So, if you fancy any of that, make sure you enter!

Thursday, 22 December 2011

Fip Pink Floyd eveningIn early November, Fip, part of the Radio France network, ran a mammoth evening of Pink Floyd. Due to huge demand from their listeners, the radio station have decided to repeat this, and are replaying the whole thing from December 31st at 8:30pm, right through to January 1st, at 7am. The perfect way to conclude a Floyd-filled 2011, and to kick off 2012!

As you'll see from the schedule of the musical selections, which we are very happy to bring you in full below, the coverage includes not just their best known "classics" but solo recordings, cover versions, and even the Live At Pompeii soundtrack as part of the evening. They've also said that they will be airing interview segments which presumably will be in the first half-hour of the marathon.

More information on the radio station, and how to tune in, can be found through this link, and read on for the full breakdown, minute-by-minute, of what you'll hear...

Roger Waters talks about 2012 Wall tour Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Wednesday, 21 December 2011

On the Rolling Stone website this week, Roger Waters is interviewed, talking about his hopes and fears regarding the future of the Middle East and America, his thoughts on Barack Obama, and has some interesting insights into the 2012 Wall shows...and possibly beyond.

On the shows in South America, in places that don't have arenas, Roger said "I'm playing in soccer stadiums, and I've decided that the arena show that I produced of The Wall is not inclusive enough to play in a soccer stadium. We'd made the wall a lot wider, so I've been working on the content. I've worked on ways that the audience can see that tiny bloke a long way way without it being the standard, "Let's put up a couple of IMAX screens and they can watch us singing and playing the guitar out of sync."

"I don't know [if this will be the last big tour]. They wanted me to go back to Europe after I finish this August and I've said, "No, I'm not going to do that." But The Wall is an extraordinarily satisfying piece to perform, so it may well be that I go back to Europe in 2013. I have no idea whether it's the last big tour. I just don't know."

Storm Thorgerson book, "The Raging Storm" Print E-mail

The Raging Storm - Storm Thorgerson & Peter CurzonAs many of you are now aware from our review of The Raging Storm - The Album Graphics of StormStudios, the latest book from our favourite graphic designer, Storm Thorgerson, and his team, is a fun and enthralling tome. Associated with Pink Floyd since 1968, Storm, along with his colleagues Hipgnosis and more recently StormStudios, has provided most of the Floyd's album cover art along with other key imagery. Storm himself is a much respected personality within the world of Pink Floyd, his contribution a key part of their story.

The Raging Storm is a collection of many pieces that StormStudios have completed for various artists over the past four years - not just for bands such as Pink Floyd, but more recent artists too, all of whom have been inspired to use StormStudios thanks to their painstaking approach to the work, creating often big and bold, unforgettable images, with a sense of humour or a cryptic note infusing each image.

Our exclusive and extensive interview with Storm Thorgerson has inspired many to seek out more information on the book, and we hear that this limited edition book is selling strongly. So you don't miss out on this cracking book, visit theragingstorm.firebrandstore.com. There, you can find the limited hardback, along with a very limited deluxe edition that comes with a special print and is signed by Storm.

To remind you, just for Brain Damage visitors, we've arranged a very special, exclusive discount. You can get £5 off the hardback edition (therefore each book costs £30 plus p&p instead of the recommended price of £35 plus p&p). To do this, you need to enter the special promo code of STORM DAMAGE in the voucher area at the bottom of the checkout process. Please note the code is case sensitive, so enter it in CAPITALS. The discount should then be applied, and you'll see that your basket total has reduced.

Pink Floyd roadie Alan Styles passes away Print E-mail
Written by Matt

Alan Styles, Peter Watts, and Roger WatersIt is with much regret that we bring you the sad news that Alan Styles, who for many years was a roadie for Pink Floyd, passed away yesterday (December 8th, 2011). Formerly from Cambridge, Alan had more recently moved to the USA, and his sister Ann said that he died peacefully in hospital there, and that he had been suffering from pneumonia. He was 75.

Alan (seen on the left in the accompanying picture) was well-known to Pink Floyd fans, with his biggest exposure being his vocal on the eponymous track found on 1970's Atom Heart Mother - 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast'. This track features the Floyd in the background, whilst Alan talks about the breakfast he is getting ready, reminiscing about other breakfasts he has had: "Breakfast in Los Angeles. Macrobiotic stuff..." Alan is also included on the cover of Ummagumma, and he assists Nick Mason on the Merry Xmas Song (also known as Here Comes Santa), which was aired on BBC radio.

Our condolences to his family and friends.

In an update to the above, the following video clip has now been released, showing Alan in 2000:
