Pink Floyd dominate new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine Print E-mail

Rolling Stone 1141 - Pink Floyd coverThe new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine (US edition, number 1141) hits newsstands on September 30th, and is dominated with their Pink Floyd cover story. David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Nick Mason all spoke with senior writer Brian Hiatt for the issue, discussing the band's fraught history, the making of their 1973 masterpiece Dark Side of the Moon and the delicate current state of their relationship.

Elsewhere in the magazine, Roger Waters looks to the future, and in a follow-up to his announcement last night on the Jimmy Fallon show of North American dates to come, in RS he expands on this. They explain that the show will hit venues he missed the first time around – as well as baseball stadiums in a few big cities. "There are quite a few markets we didn't cover last time, like Austin, but we want to base the tour around Saturday nights in baseball stadiums. As we speak, I'm at my office working on an outdoor version of the show. We've done light tests at Fenway Park and Wrigley Field and Yankee Stadium just to see what the ambient light is like. And it's fine. It works. We've taken part of the Wall and the projectors into those three places."

Bad news for those of us in Europe though. "They're trying to get me back to Europe next year," says Waters. "But I think I'll be completely cooked by the end of July next year."

The magazine will be available in selected outlets worldwide as an import, and localised editions may also feature the same Floyd coverage.

Foo Fighters and Roger Waters (photo: NBC)Last week, we told you about the week-long celebration of Pink Floyd on the NBC television show "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" in the US. Monday's programme featured Nick Mason being interviewed, along with The Shins performing Breathe.

Last night's show, which aired a short while ago, has set our inbox alight! Roger Waters took to the stage with the Foo Fighters for an apparently storming rendition of "In The Flesh", but it was Roger's interview with Fallon that really thrilled our US friends...on air, he not only talked about the infamous Pat Boone show, but he also confirmed that he was taking The Wall back to North America next year. No dates or indication of cities to be visited, but good news for many, nonetheless!

The show airs each night for the rest of this week, at 12:35am (ET)/11:35pm (CT), and highlights are available to stream from the show's website following transmission. The rest of the week:

  • Wednesday, September 28th: MGMT will perform the early Floyd track, "Lucifer Sam" from 1967's "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn".
  • Thursday, September 29th: "Late Night" will go country when popular country performer Dierks Bentley takes on the Floyd classic, "Wish You Were Here".
  • Friday, September 30th: Pearl Jam will conclude the week with their take on "Mother" from "The Wall".

Why Pink Floyd launch party inviteWhy Pink Floyd? Well I'm really not sure. Not sure of exactly what this intriguing campaign title refers to. What I do know is my invitation stated that I was being invited to another significant Pink Floyd event taking place in New York City. This time it's the "EMI/Capitol Exclusive Party And Audio Premiere Celebrating The Worldwide Launch Of Pink Floyd's Newly Released Catalogue."

Yesterday evening, New York's Rose Center For Earth And Space at the American Museum Of Natural History, hosted EMI/Capitol's launch party for the massive catalogue reissue campaign Why Pink Floyd? For those of you who are not yet familiar with this campaign, please click here for full details. But on to the party, and the special guest...

"An Evening With Nick Mason" - Grammy Museum in Los Angeles Print E-mail

Nick Mason - Grammy Museum 22nd September 2011On Thursday night (September 22nd), the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles featured "An Evening With Nick Mason". Taking place in the Clive Davis Theater, Nick was joined on stage by executive editor of Yahoo! Music and former editor of CREEM, Dave DiMartino. Brain Damage regular Darren was at the event, and sends in the following report. The accompanying pictures are courtesy of Jill from Tourbuslive.com. Now, over to Darren:

I was at the Grammy Museum for the Nick Mason talk. Nick talked about a lot of things during the evening. He said the full immersion sets for DSOTM, Wish You Were Here and The Wall were based on the popularity of those records but at some point if there was enough interest they could do Immersion sets for other albums. He said the early stuff could be combined to one Immersion, and he has a demo disc at home of the stuff they recorded to enter a 'Battle Of The Bands' competition and that demo has 3 or 4 Syd songs and a blues jam on it. He noted that this would be the last time the Floyd catalogue would be released.

Nick Mason - Grammy Museum 22nd September 2011He talked of the great shame of not having anything on film or tape of many of the 70's concerts but did say he had just gone through some of 'the Southampton tapes' of a fan's bootlegs - the fan had died and his widow sent them on to Nick. He said the sheer wealth of the material is amazing and that this guy had practically every show PF had played on a bootleg. He loved the Division Bell tour, he also said he wished they had toured DSOTM longer as he doesn't feel they did enough touring - it was album, tour, album, tour in those days and feels the band could have developed better if they had taken more time.

Nick said he's meeting with Roger next week. Regarding a reunion he said it would never happen for money but in a Live 8 situation or something similarly positive he feels it could happen, even though David says no. Nick said "He said that before Live 8 and look what happened!". It was a great night.
