Pink Floyd's Eclipse included in Olympics opening ceremony? Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Wednesday, 20 June 2012

The UK's Daily Telegraph has revealed what appears to be Creative Director of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony Danny Boyle's 86-song soundtrack for the event.

An interesting and eclectic selection of some of the best (and some of the more questionable) British music from over the years includes contemporary artists alongside classic artists such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and...Pink Floyd. The concluding track, Eclipse, from 1973's The Dark Side Of The Moon appears in the final segment, nestled between Abide With Me, and The End from The Beatles Abbey Road album.

You can read the full tracklisting at the Telegraph website. They do make it clear that "officials will not confirm that the playlist is the official soundtrack for the opening ceremony on July 27 but it appears to be a good indication of what to expect".

Venice member Michael Lennon has spent the last week in Florida, visiting his band mates, brother Mark and cousins Kipp and Pat, on the Wall tour, sharing their hotel, riding on the private jet, and taking in all of the Wall concerts. He's been posting pictures, videos and updates on Venice's Facebook page, facebook.com/venicetheband. One recent entry provided an intimate glimpse into Saturday's soundcheck in Orlando:

Tonight (Monday), the four members of Venice will perform an opening set for the Harry Waters Quartet at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, FL which we mentioned the other day. Wall vocalist Robbie Wyckoff will also be a part of this show.

Then on Wednesday, June 20th, the night after Roger Waters brings his Wall tour to Nashville, TN, Venice will perform a one hour set with no band, only acoustic guitars and voices, at Nashville's 12th & Porter. (114 12th Ave. N.) So those amazing harmonies that Roger Waters fans have been enjoying all over the world these past two years will be front and center. Tickets are still available for both nights.

UPDATE: Here's a video, courtesy of adam @ CHeeSeHeaDPRoDuCTioNS, from last night's Harry Waters/Venice show at Revolution Live, showcasing "Goodbye Blue Sky" and "The Show Must Go On":

Nick Mason interview in new issue of Relix Magazine Print E-mail

Saturday, 16 June 2012

Relix, June 2012The June 2012 issue of Relix Magazine in the US has a short, one-page feature of interest to Floyd fans. 'Parting Shots: Nick Mason on Pink Floyd's Immersion and Beyond' consists of an interview with Nick, talking about the background to the recent reissue campaign.

"We realized that perhaps because it had been such a long time, it actually might be interesting and the fans might like the details on how we did things. In the past, the theory had always been that you just released the album—as perfect as you can make it—in its final form. I have a big collection of jazz records with a lot of outtakes and it does increase the interest."

On the potential audience for the multi-disc sets, Nick suggested that it was for "people who know the music already and would like to engage at another level, particularly with The Wall, where you can track one song from the original Roger demos through the band demos to the actual recording to the live playing. It’s not what I’d recommend to a beginner.

"The idea was always that if people liked it, we could continue. I would love to get started on an early Pink Floyd Immersion, although we're very short on music. We do have some demos that we recorded before we had a record contract, and we have some tracks from around A Saucerful of Secrets that have been bootlegged but never put on records."

The full interview is within the magazine, which is available now from stores in the US, and internationally in selected locations as an import.
