A new official Pink Floyd compilation project titled 8-Tracks, featuring eight essential classics selected from the band’s 1971 - 1979 era, has just been announced and will be released on June 5th via Sony Music. The album is available to pre-order in various vinyl editions, on CD and digitally.

The compilation looks to be primarily aimed at the many who are discovering Pink Floyd for the first time, and wish to explore the catalogue without plunging right in. It has a tracklist covering the 1970's - often seen as the 'golden era' of the band - with a line-up of One Of These Days, Wot's...Uh The Deal, Money, Another Brick In The Wall Part 2, Wish You Were Here, Time, Comfortably Numb, and the full version of Pigs On The Wing. This is the version from the 8-track cartridge of Animals; due to the nature of 8-tracks, the song has a bridging solo from new recruit, Snowy White. The only other place it became available was Snowy's 1995 compilation, Goldtop, so it's good to have it included here.

The track sequence has been edited by Steven Wilson using sound effects sourced from the original multitracks to make for a continuous listening experience in classic Floydian style. It's an excellent starting point for new listeners to discover the depth and breadth of Pink Floyd's peerless album catalogue, as well as a carefully curated collection for longtime fans to appreciate.

Pink Floyd 8-Tracks will be released on vinyl (black or a nice light blue vinyl in limited numbers, shown here to the right), CD and digitally. The editions are available worldwide, with the exception of the US - which are all exclusives through Target. Target are selling the CD as an exclusive, along with the vinyl in pink, that comes either with, or without, a special t-shirt (size large) included in the packaging. Target don't currently offer a black vinyl edition - you'll need to go to Amazon Canada or elsewhere to get one of those if you are in the US. Update: Rough Trade seem to be offering the three editions available elsewhere in the world from their US store, listed below.
