STORY UPDATED WITH SECOND ELEPHANT! Pink Floyd cover designer Storm Thorgerson is one of many artists who have contributed their time and efforts to the Elephant Family charity. The Elephant Parade celebrates the Asian elephant, an animal on the brink of extinction, in the most colourful way possible - by having some 250 model nellies installed in the streets around the West End of London, each customised by a notable artist.
Situated by Hyde Park Corner is Storm's design. As you'll see from the pictures that Gary Kirk kindly sent us, the elephant quite uniquely is covered with mirrors, and of course has a Floyd connection with the name...
Following publication of this story, we were contacted by Andrew Burgess, who said: "I came across your article entitled 'Storm Thorgerson designs Zabriskie Elephant' about the great man's Zabriskie Elephant currently on parade at London's Hyde Park Corner. But did you realise he also has a second on display?
"Mr Thorgerson also designed #30: Vorsprung which is on display nearby the Audi dealership outside Green Park."
Our thanks to Andrew for the following picture, which you can click on to see in more detail:

Back in November 2005, we told you about an incredibly rare recording of Syd Barrett, performing live on 27th January, 1972, with the Last-Minute Put-Together Boogie Band, at a show in Cambridge.
The Last-Minute Put-Together Boogie Band's set consists of 5 blues songs before Syd comes on stage for a nine-minute jam ("Number Nine") followed by 3 blues songs/improvs ("Gotta Be A Reason", "Let's Roll" and "Sweet Little Angel"). The Hawkwind and Pink Fairies sets on the reel are also reported to be worth hearing.
The recording is now up for auction at Bonhams on June 23rd, as lot 212 - a "1/4 inch reel-to-reel tape on 10inch BASF spool in Agfa PE36 box with handwritten recording details, with statement of provenance", this Syd curiosity has an estimate of £2,500 - 3,500. Our thanks to Greg Curry and to Mark at Spaceward Studios for the info.

Following yesterday's announcement of the 2011 Roger Waters Wall tour of Europe, a pair of new interviews with Roger can be heard online at the moment.
First, the BBC Radio 4 Today programme interview from early yesterday morning (which we mentioned here) has been segregated off on its own page at the BBC.co.uk website. Probably only accessible to those in the UK and parts of Europe, the four minute interview has Roger explaining why he is taking The Wall on the road again.
Elsewhere, on the Planet Rock website, veteran DJ Nicky Horne (who interviewed Roger and the rest of Pink Floyd as part of a set of great Capital Radio interviews back in 1976) caught up with Roger after the tour press conference, for a ten minute chat. In it, he covers in some detail the preparations for the tour, which is fascinating. You can hear it at PlanetRock.co.uk or download it directly (it's around 9.2MB).

Roger Waters has spoken to BBC News arts correspondent Rebecca Jones for BBC Radio 4's Today Programme, in the run-up to the UK/European dates which we expect to be announced today. The BBC note that he will be taking the show to more than 30 cities from next May, including concerts at the O2 Arena in London, and Manchester.
In the interview, which you can read here, Roger explains the album's genesis, why he is reviving it now, and reveals an offer to get back together with his former bandmates.
They asked him why he is touring The Wall: "I decided to dip my toe back into the world of the touring rock 'n' roll person back at the turn of the century. Two years ago and the year before that I did a tour with the whole of The Dark Side of the Moon. So last year I was thinking, well, what am I going to do? Shall I just play golf or garden or go into politics, or have I got one more of these in me? I'm 66 years old now. So I thought, I think I have got one more. And I love to work. I shall certainly go on working but whether I'll do any more big tours I don't know. My fiancee said to me, if you're going to go out and do it again, do The Wall. That's what people will want to hear."
They also asked him if this was to be his farewell tour: "I wouldn't go that far, but yeah, it could be. I don't know what else I would do. In 2011 we're putting my opera on again in five cities in the south of Brazil. That's another thing that's very close to my heart. So there is always work to be done."
