A new book, in French, has been published by Sceren looking at the story of Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother. Written by Philippe Gonin (a guitarist, teacher at the University of Bourgogne, specialist in the history of modern music, and member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music), it is aimed at French music students; Atom Heart Mother is now one of the pieces of music to study on the French A-level syllabus.
From the synopsis, the aim of the book is to "highlight the creative process that led partly to the first performances in early 1970, through to completion of the album, released in October of the same year. It puts it into perspective with the work of Floyd in the 1960s.
"The study of the work is based both on the score of Geesin and on a purely auditory level. We strive to reveal how, in this hybrid work, which nevertheless proved ultimately successful, the merger took place between scholarly and popular music. Using traditional analytical methods and use of research, we highlight some key elements to an overall understanding of this unique work in the course of the group.
"Richly illustrated, the book provides in part unpublished photographs of the Atom Heart Mother recording sessions at Abbey Road. The preface is written by Ron Geesin." With Geesin's contributions, and the rare pictures of the Floyd (supplied by Nick Mason), it certainly sounds an interesting study.
The book can be ordered direct from the publishers, Sceren.com, who ship worldwide. Our thanks to Olivier Bugaud for the info.

Our very best wishes go to Snowy White today (March 3rd), to mark his 64th birthday!
Snowy, who in the last few years performed with Roger Waters on his Dark
Side of the Moon tour, and is now on Roger's current Wall tour, has
also toured with his own band to much acclaim. Of course, Snowy has had a
long history with Roger and Pink Floyd...
Recording a guitar part in 1976 to bridge Pigs On The Wing 1 & 2 on
the Animals album 8-track cartridge, he also played on the 1977 Animals
tour, on Richard Wright's Wet Dream album (1978), and The Wall concerts
of 1980.
After devoting a lot of time to solo material in the early eighties, he
started work with Roger Waters on his solo material and has been a key
member of his band ever since. He has been busy on his own projects,
too, with his band The Snowy White Blues Project thrilling audiences
across the UK and Europe.
Have a great day, Snowy!

The schedule begins with the Classic Albums documentary on DSOTM, followed at 2pm by the film of The Wall. Then, at 4pm, The Pink Floyd Story: Which One's Pink? 5:30pm has David Gilmour: Live in Gdansk, and this is followed at 7:30pm with the world premiere of The Story Of Wish You Were Here.
This is a new documentary, made by Eagle Rock (the people behind the DSOTM Classic Albums show), and we can reveal that the show features new interviews with Roger Waters (in New York), David Gilmour (at Astoria), Storm Thorgerson, Nick Mason, engineer Brian Humphries, Venetta Fields, Jill Furmanovsky, stunt man Ronnie Rondell, Roy Harper, and Aubrey 'Po' Powell. Definitely worth watching! Hopefully, the show will be available to view elsewhere before too long, and we'll keep you posted on that.

The (Brazilian) Portuguese translation of the excellent "Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story Of
Pink Floyd" (known as "Comfortably Numb" in the US) by our friend Mark Blake, is published in Brazil on Monday (March 5th). The book, now titled 'Nos Bastidores Do Pink Floyd' (roughly translates as 'Backstage with Pink Floyd') is published by Generale and has been released to coincide with Roger Waters' upcoming tour dates in Argentina and Brazil.
The book - a cracking read - has been very well received by the Floyd community. Drawing on his own interviews with all of the band members, plus almost a hundred new interviews with the group's friends, road crew, producers, designers, former housemates and university colleagues, the book is from our perspective, a superb, incredibly detailed, and essential look at the band's history. Our review, and ordering information for other editions, here.
The book will be available from all good booksellers in Brazil from Monday.

With great timing, due to the imminent record breaking Wall concerts in the country this month, a new biography of Roger Waters appeared in Argentinian bookstores yesterday (March 1st). "Roger Waters - Paredes y puentes: el cerebro de Pink Floyd" (which translates as "Walls and bridges: the brain of Pink Floyd") is certain to be a popular title with the many Floyd fans in that country.
The book is described as the "first and only biography of the English musician who broke all the records in Argentina. An essential document written by the specialized Argentinian rock reporter Sergio Marchi, to understand this genius, and how a young boy - almost an architect - paradoxically build his musical career knocking down walls".
The author, Sergio Marchi, has been a music journalist in the country for many years, writing for everything from newspapers to the local edition of Rolling Stone. This is his sixth book.
Our thanks to Claudio David Knaup for his help in bringing this information to you.
