Roger Waters now standing Outside The Wall Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Sunday, 22 July 2012

Well, after 192 public shows, the 2012 Roger Waters The Wall Live tour is now finished. Last night saw the final show take place on the Plaines D'Abraham in Québec City, and we're keenly awaiting reports from BD readers from around the world who made the journey to Canada for this incredible conclusion.

As you'll see from the interview with Roger below, the show was much bigger and many changes were made to cater for the larger venue and wall. Amongst these were bigger projections, a much longer "flight path" for the Stuka, and some four times the normal amount of pyro. Keep an eye on the Québec City showpage as we'll be adding reports, pictures and video as it arrives, and in the meantime, listen to Roger, pre-show, in front of one of the side sections of wall explaining what was going to make the concert so special...

UPDATE: Show reports are now coming in, and we also have some wonderful video, including a precis of the concert shot by the promoters, from the afternoon of the show, with fans running like hell to get a good position at the front, through to various key moments of the show. We've also got a great video of the piggie being brought down to earth and turned into rashers! Go to the showpage to check out these, and other things...

Qubec prepares for Roger Waters The Wall Live tour closing epic Print E-mail

Roger Waters - Quebec 2012 concert posterIn around six hours time, the concluding show on the 2012 Roger Waters The Wall Live tour, being held in Québec City, will take place. Excitement levels for this show seem to be exceeding all others on the 2010-2012 tour, going by reaction we've seen so far. Featuring an 800 foot wide wall, it will be the second biggest outdoor production of The Wall ever, eclipsed just by the 1990 concert in Berlin following the reunification of Germany. That saw well in excess of 350,000 fans witness the show (that figure was the limit of the German authorities ability to count the ever-growing crowd). Coincidentally, and as the concert poster to the left notes [click the thumbnail], both shows take place on the same day, just separated by 22 years.

Tonight's show will have more than 70,000 fans in the audience, and their wristbands have got RFID technology built in, to link attendees' wristbands to their Facebook accounts. This process will allow them to post a message from Amnesty International and Roger Waters during the concert.

Being in a public place, preparations for the concert have been not exactly hidden from public gaze, and thanks to BD visitor Frédéric Vandois we have a wide range of great pictures of the staging and wall being built, which you can view over at the Brain Damage Facebook page.

The local press have been giving the concert a lot of coverage, unsurprisingly. Le Journal de Québec have posted stories here, and here; La Presse has posted lots of articles, which can be seen here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. Finally, Voir Québec also posted a story in the last day or so. Our thanks to Cédric Guillot and Ed Lopez-Reyes for these links.

We've got a few kind people on site at the concert, so make sure you check back for our coverage of the show...

The Raging Storm - London exhibition, July 2012As many of you know, recently published was The Raging Storm - The Album Graphics of StormStudios, the latest, absorbing book from legendary graphic designer, Storm Thorgerson, and his team. Associated with Pink Floyd since 1968, Storm, along with his colleagues Hipgnosis and more recently StormStudios, has provided most of the Floyd's album cover art along with other key imagery. Storm himself is a much respected personality within the world of Pink Floyd, his contribution a key part of their story.

The Raging Storm is a collection of many pieces that StormStudios have completed for various artists over the past four years - not just for bands such as Pink Floyd, but more recent artists too, all of whom have been inspired to use StormStudios thanks to their painstaking approach to the work, creating often big and bold, unforgettable images, with a sense of humour or a cryptic note infusing each image.

The work is now celebrated in an exhibition that is now open, and runs until July 29th, 2012, at the gallery@oxo at the iconic Oxo Tower Wharf - a landmark along the River Thames for many years. The exhibition is free, and open 11am-6pm daily. To whet your whistle prior to arriving at the gallery (or indeed if you are unable to attend), check out our extensive, exclusive interview with Storm.

The invitation-only launch night took place yesterday evening, and saw a packed gallery enjoying the works on the wall and Storm's hosting of the event. Our pictures below give a flavour of the exhibition, which is well worth a visit. Seeing the artwork presented in a gallery in this way gives a whole new dimension to many of them, showing details that a CD cover could never show...

Quebec prepares for the arrival of Roger Waters Print E-mail

Tuesday, 17 July 2012

Quebec prepares for Roger Waters (Le Soleil)Le Soleil in Canada are today reporting on this coming Saturday's huge concert at Les Plaines d'Abraham in Quebec City, for which there are still some tickets available to buy through official sources. The concert is due to be a spectacular conclusion to the 2012 tour.

The promoter Michel Brazeau says his entourage will work "day and night" to prepare the stage and site, including the wall of over 728 feet long, and has said that only a bad snowstorm would stop the show. "[Roger is] a perfectionist. People who work for him are perfectionists. There is little that is left to chance. Sure there are always unexpected things, but there as little as possible of them. One thing that is clear is that it will be ready for Saturday. Even if it would rain heavily all week, it'll be ready for Saturday," said Brazeau. "And the names that are associated with Roger Waters, they are all guys who have decades of experience. It'll work."

Yesterday, Environment Canada forecast for Saturday a mix of sun and cloud with a temperature of about 27 degrees. Forty-six truckloads of equipment are expected to arrive shortly in Quebec with the stage, equipment, and crew. They will be adding to the portion of the wall already built by the Quebec workers, to make the longest wall ever built during The Wall Live shows.

Wall Retrospective - London Blackall Studios (exterior)Last night, The Wall Retrospective, celebrating the upcoming 30th anniversary of the motion picture 'Pink Floyd: The Wall' opened in London. On-set stills photographer David Appleby is honouring the fans of the acclaimed visual rock masterpiece, with this exhibition of stunning behind-the-scenes images taken during the production of 'The Wall'.

Held at Blackall Studios in Shoreditch, London, the exhibition is open to the public from today, through to July 18th, which of course is shortly before the 2012 Olympics hit the capital. On display, there are over 40 traditionally and painstakingly hand-printed black and white silver gelatin prints from the original negatives, by Silverbase of The Photographic Centre which is within the legendary Pinewood Studios - where some of the film was shot. Other images from the film are displayed too.

Brain Damage have been involved since early this year, with help and advice, but the project has been some four years in the making by Tara Renee. The images themselves have been revelations; rare, behind the scenes shots, along with iconic moments from the production but from a unique perspective. Most have never been seen before, having been discovered by Tara lurking in a store room at Pinewood since they were originally shot and developed.

Last night's invitation-only launch event, pictured below, saw an eclectic and interesting mix of people from the worlds of music, film, fashion and photography, come together to celebrate David's work.
