Rare early Pink Floyd live photos exhibition - last few days Print E-mail

Flashback exhibition including rare Pink Floyd images by Adam Ritchie"Flashback" at Artisan gallery, in London is coming to a close this weekend, and we thought we'd remind you, in case you are in or around London in the next few days. The exhibition showcases Adam Ritchie's incredible photos of Pink Floyd live in 1966/67, and the Velvet Underground in New York a year or so earlier, and our report on the event can be read here.

In London, 1966, Adam's old friend John "Hoppy" Hopkins had started the UFO Club and new bands got an opportunity to play. It was here Adam met Pink Floyd. He photographed them several times at the UFO and at the Roundhouse and got them on the cover of "Town" magazine. Many years later all but a few of the images remain. Some of these are being shown at Artisan for the very first time.

Adam told us: "Some have been shown before but many are unseen until now. You may have seen some in Nick Mason's big book. The pictures were the only ones left after all the rest of my professional photo work was lost, so they are particularly important to me."

"Flashback" runs until March 24th, 2012, Wednesday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm, and more information can be found at www.artisan80.com. The exhibition poster to the right, and following photos [click the thumbnails], give a flavour of the wonderful images on display at the Artisan. They are all copyright Adam Ritchie, used here strictly with permission. You can see more of his work at his website: www.adam-ritchie-photography.co.uk.

Roger Waters filming promo video in Buenos Aires Print E-mail

Roger Waters in Buenos AiresFour years ago, Roger Waters recorded a song for the Fundación Alas, a foundation to help improve health and education for children in Latin America. Despite the long period of time that has passed since then, work has recently resumed on this project.

Roger, who is currently in Buenos Aires performing a record breaking set of nine Wall concerts at the Estadio River Plate, has chosen the city to film the promo video for the song, which is now called "The Child Will Fly".

Working with the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and with the support of the Spanish International Cooperation Agency, Alas made a contribution of $2 million for 22 early childhood centers serving more than 2,000 children in neighborhoods with high poverty levels.

The theme song is intended to help raise awareness about the importance of early education as a tool for children, with financial and cultural projects hopefully opening a world of greater possibilities. The 12-minute track features the collaboration of different international and Latin artists such as Shakira, Eric Clapton, Pedro Aznar and Gustavo Cerati, who have worked actively with Alas.

The video will feature the artistic supervision of Roger Waters and directed by Argentine Diego Kaplan. Its premiere will be held in the city, and included in the projections of the Wall shows in Buenos Aires this month.

Rare early Pink Floyd live photo exhibition - launch report Print E-mail

Adam Ritchie exhibition - outside the galleryLast month we told you about "Flashback", a new exhibition of rare early Pink Floyd live photos, opening in London. Saturday evening saw the official launch event, and BD's own Bruce Tippen was there to check it out, and meet up with Adam Ritchie, the photographer.

Adam is a man of many talents, spending time as an economist, as a photographer for 15 years, and as a cabinet maker, furniture designer and builder. He has now retired but remembers the days spent with his flat-mate Hoppy in the 60s starting the 'revolution' with the London Free School.

Adam originally had over 300 photos of the early Floyd from 1966 but only managed to salvage one case of pictures following a very unfortunate loss of his archive by the shop where he had placed his trust in the early days. Hence, what we see now is all that remains from what would have been an amazing collection. These are shots from the Architectural Association Party and UFO Club both from December 1966.

David Gilmour performs at the Douglas Adams 60th Birthday Party Print E-mail

David Gilmour at Douglas Adams 60th Birthday Party11 March 2012 would have been Douglas Adams' 60th Birthday. To celebrate this event, Douglas's family and friends decided to hold a "virtual birthday party" in London, which turned out to be a stunning, star-studded event with chat, comedy and music filling the evening.

The event, which was benefitting two charities - the EIA (Environmental Investigation Agency), but mainly Save The Rhino - was a sell-out with devoted Adams fans taking the lion's share of tickets. When tickets went on sale in early December, there was a small rumour on Hitchhiker-related websites that David might be taking part, but all the sites which mentioned that very quickly removed all mention. Since then, there was no mention that David might be participating.

Of course, David and Douglas had known each other for some years. The original Hitchhiker TV series included a few bars from Shine On You Crazy Diamond, as "hummed" by Marvin the paranoid android. Later, Adams was to provide the title of the Floyd's final album, and subsequently appeared on their final tour one night in their Earls Court run in October 1994. The chances, then, of David participating in this event were inevitably quite high. And, to the delight of the audience, he clearly couldn't miss this celebration of his friend.
