Our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the film director, producer and screenwriter Adrian Maben, who has very sadly passed away, it was announced this morning.
Adrian, born in Scotland in 1942, had a long, productive career. Within the Floyd community, he is best known for Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii, in its original cinema released format, and the subsequent expanded versions, commemorated earlier this year with the fully restored Pink Floyd At Pompeii MCMLXXII. This appeared in cinemas across the world (including in IMAX) and then released on Blu-ray, DVD, 2CD and 2LP. The new versions are a testament to Adrian's careful work capturing the band in action in this very special location.
It remains a favourite of many Floyd fans, with the atmospheric capturing of the band in the early 1970s unsurpassed, and is a fitting legacy of Adrian's unique concert film concept.
For those who haven't seen it, he talked in depth with us at Brain Damage (with some questions set by none other than Storm Thorgerson) in this 2003 interview with Adrian Maben about Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii. It has some fascinating background to the struggles in getting the idea off the ground in the first place, to the issues with filming (including ideas which were abandoned during the shoot), to subsequent reissues including the Director's Cut.
For those who are able to visit the site, the galleries within the walls of the amphitheatre at Pompeii are host to Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii The Exhibition by Adrian Maben, with more than 250 photos from the filming, behind the scenes, film adverts and posters, and video footage.
Adrian also worked at a later stage with Roger Waters, filming the birth and creation of his opera Ca Ira, for over fifteen years. With well over 300 tapes to go through, Adrian certainly had his work cut out editing this down to the resulting documentary DVD which accompanied the double CD set of Ca Ira.
An extremely kind, gentle and perceptive man, he will be sorely missed.
