David Gilmour's Black Strat guitar auction - most expensive guitar again! Print E-mail

David Gilmour's iconic Black Strat has - for a second time - become the world's most expensive guitar after going under the hammer at Christie's in New York on Thursday, March 12th.

The 1969 Fender Stratocaster sold for a massive $14.55 million (£11 million) during The Jim Irsay Collection: Hall of Fame auction. The hammer price was $12.1 million (£9 million) but once fees were added on, it ended up at the higher price. The bidding took place over 21 minutes which must be unusual in itself!

The figure far exceeds the $3,975,000 it fetched under the hammer in June 2019, when it was the most expensive guitar of all time for one year, until Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged guitar sold for just over $6 million in June 2020.

I've just got to figure out where I'm going to store it... *

* This was a joke!
