Nick Mason is taking a break from promoting his new book about Pink Floyd ("Inside Out") to make a return to his first love - motor cars. On Saturday June 18th, a few hours before the start of the Le Mans 24 Hours (reckoned by many to be the greatest race of all), 61 cars from the 1935-1955 era will compete in the Le Mans Legend: a one-hour, two-driver race on the full Sarthe circuit in France.
This support race features some of the best performers from more than 80-plus years of 24-hour racing at the famous venue. Headline entries include Sir Stirling Moss in the very first production Jaguar C-type; three-times Le Mans winner and 1961 F1 world champion Phil Hill in an ex-Fangio Alfa Romeo 3000CM; and Johnny Herbert in a 1955 Jaguar D-type.
Nick Mason is better known as Floyd's drummer than a Le Mans racer, although Nick has competed in the modern 24 Hours five times between 1979 and 1984. Nick enters two cars into the event. First, a 1935 Aston Martin Ulster, which will be driven by his daughter Holly Mason, along with Dean Lanzante, that is entered into Class 1 (1935-1939, 2000cc and below). The second car is a 1949 Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica, which will be driven by Nick and his wife Annette. This is entered into Class 3 (1949-1953, 2000cc and below).
More information about the event can be found at www.motorracinglegends.com.
