Record Store Day exclusive item sticker

Due to the current global COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic, the annual Record Store Day has been postponed, and is now scheduled to take place on June 20th. All items that were due on April 18th should now be available from participating physical stores on the new date (assuming the situation globally has improved sufficiently by then).

From a Pink Floyd related standpoint, that includes the 7" single of Arnold Layne, recorded live at the Syd Barrett tribute held at the BarbicanRoger Waters Live In Berlin 1990 on 2LP clear vinylthe Guy Pratt/David Gilmour collaboration on the Hackers soundtrack 2LP, and the 12" Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets single.

Obviously the pandemic is a developing situation and should there be more alterations, we will let you all know. At this stage, we suspect pressing plants are already producing these items so they should be available, in some matter, at some point...

To us, it is not a particularly surprising move, as those who have attended previous years will be aware that you will be stood queuing, shoulder to shoulder with strangers, for a number of hours. Add in the number of surfaces that will be touched by (in some cases) a few hundred people all in a short space of time, we were expecting this sort of precaution to take place.

Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets - film premiere pictures Print E-mail

Last night, a significant chunk of you would have been at cinemas in various countries, watching the special presentation of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets Live At The Roundhouse. Followed by an exclusive Q&A with the band, that was recorded a short while ago, reaction to the film (and the Q&A) has been thoroughly positive.

Brain Damage was at the world premiere on Monday evening, at London's Picturehouse Central, which included a nice introduction by Nick Mason before welcoming the rest of the band to join him in front of the screen. Pictures of this are below.

For those who are yet to see the film (which is released on April 17th on Blu-ray, DVD, CD and 2LP, as well as digitally) we won't spoil things for you. Suffice it to say that a fantastic job has been done with the recording, and editing, of the Saucers' at the Roundhouse. Whilst some live albums and videos can be quite sterile, LATR has an involving and exciting feel to it. In places there are short interview segments, and these work well in the points of the show when the stage falls into darkness, and instruments are changed. The interview bits give good insight into the project, and only enhance things. You will NOT want to miss seeing this release...it has easily exceeded our hopes and expectations for the live recording.

Just for some clarification, we went direct to Sony to check out the situation with region coding on the Blu-ray edition as there is still some confusion or misinformation about it. We have had confirmation from them that the Blu-ray has NO region coding at all, so will be playable worldwide, irrespective of where you purchase it from.

Hackers soundtrack

Following on from our recent news that the 2020 Record Store Day would be including amongst the raft of rarities, available on April 18th at participating stores (and not online) releases from Roger Waters, Pink Floyd and Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets, there's a fourth item of interest for Floyd fans included on the list. It's also something that has been the subject of rumour in the past...and now can be confirmed.

The 1995 film Hackers had an interesting music soundtrack, and in particular, an instrumental heard at the climax of the film. In a sequence at New York's Grand Central Station, there is a joint piece by Guy Pratt and David Gilmour to accompany the scene. Rolling Stone did the reveal: "Gilmour visited the home of Guy Pratt, Pink Floyd's touring bassist since Momentarily Lapse of Reason, while the bassist was working on music for the 1995 movie. The meet-up became an impromptu jam session that became 'Grand Central Station'. In the film's credits, the song was only credited to the mysterious sounding Deep Cover".

The exclusive 13-track, 2LP Record Store Day edition of the album will mark the soundtrack's debut on vinyl and will feature tracks that were not included on the original album, including 'Protection' by Massive Attack, 'Open Up' by Leftfield, two pieces by Guy Pratt (including 'Grand Central Station') plus the 'Hackers Suite', performed by composer Simon Boswell.

The gatefold jacket will offer new liner notes from the film's director, Iain Softley, as well as unreleased photos of the cast. The CD and digital edition of Hackers (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which appears the previous day (April 17th) direct from Varese Sarabande will include an additional six tracks.

As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: often the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are going to be 2,500 of these available to snap up on the day.

And, as we've mentioned previously, these limited edition items are released via RSD participating stores on 18th April 2020 - go to RecordStoreDay.com for more details of who those will be. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores participating; the stores themselves can't sell it online - the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 18th (and not before), in limited quantities - first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. After RSD, if copies remain, they may put them for sale online (and of course, there'll also be copies on eBay inevitably...).

UPDATE, 13th March: Due to the COVID-19/Coronavirus pandemic, RSD2020 has moved from 18th April, to 20th June. Obviously as the situation develops, if circumstances demand the date may change again.

Happy birthday, David Gilmour! Print E-mail

David Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall in London, October 2015Our very best wishes, and many happy returns, to David Gilmour who is celebrating his 74th birthday today (March 6th)!

Born and raised in Cambridge, David became involved with various bands in the area, principally Jokers Wild who were a popular draw when they played, before joining Pink Floyd in 1968. More recent years have seen David concentrating on his solo career, and helping out chums on their musical projects on an ad hoc basis.

Last year, some 120+ of David's guitars were auctioned, raising $21.5 million (including some record-breaking amounts for individual instruments) which went to the environmental charity ClientEarth. He also appeared as a guest performer at the Richard Thompson 70th Birthday Concert, playing Dimming Of The Day and Fat Old Sun, and joining the encore. More recently (February 25th) he joined the stellar bill for the Mick Fleetwood & Friends Celebrate The Music of Peter Green and The Early Years of Fleetwood Mac concert at London's Palladium, which is being released as a 4LP, 2CD, Blu-ray and book box set this year. The concert was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity.

Finally, at the end of this month, and the start of next, David is joining his wife Polly Samson for three special evenings to mark the release of her new book, A Theatre For Dreamers, which will see David performing a few songs including a new one. Tickets for these three events, in Manchester, Birmingham, and London, are available now.

It just remains for us to wish David a very happy day! If you want to add your thoughts and wishes, you can do so at our Facebook page...

Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets Record Store Day 2020 limited 12" single

The third and last of the 2020 Record Store Day releases which could be of specific interest to Brain Damage visitors has now been revealed, hot on the heels of yesterday's announcement of the 2007 live recording of Arnold Layne, from the Syd Barrett tribute concert at London's Barbican, being released as a 7" single, and the heavyweight 180g clear 2LP vinyl issue of Roger Waters Live In Berlin 1990 on this special day, now there's also a 12" single coming from Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets!

On the A-side of the single will be live versions by the Saucers of See Emily Play and Vegetable Man, with the B-side hosting a special etching. The A-side will be a swirling pink-to-blue psychedelic vinyl design. The recordings have been taken from the upcoming Live At The Roundhouse Blu-ray, DVD/CD and 2LP sets, released on 17th April (the day before RSD) which is from the band's appearance at the London venue last year.

As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: often the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are going to be 4,000 of these available to snap up on the day.

And, as we've mentioned previously, these limited edition items are released via RSD participating stores on 18th April 2020 - go to RecordStoreDay.com for more details of who those will be.
