David Gilmour Guitar Auction: Sky Arts special coming soon Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Tuesday, 18 June 2019

Sky Arts logoWith the imminent sale of many of David Gilmour's guitars, there's currently plenty of press attention and coverage, particularly in the US.

As you know, Christie's New York is handling the upcoming sale of a significant chunk of David's personal guitar collection. With more than 120 guitars, including his preferred Fender models of Broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters, the auction on Thursday (20th June) marks a rare opportunity for guitar aficionados, musicians and collectors to explore one of the world's most comprehensive groupings of guitars that hooked a generation.

Tomorrow sees the final opportunity to visit the exhibition of the guitars in New York. Entry is free, but advance reservations are essential. Below you can see a short piece on CBS television in the US, looking at the sale.

A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY: For a more in-depth look at the sale, and the guitars in question, there's a 35 minute Sky Arts television special being aired on 28th June at 7:30pm. "Auction: David Gilmour Special" should be a fascinating look at this somewhat unexpected sale. It will be available in the UK, and no doubt a number of places in Europe (depending on satellite reception), via Sky, Virgin Media, Talk Talk TV and Now TV. It may also be available post-broadcast on the sky.com website.

New book, coming May 2020: Pink Floyd Scandinavia 1967 - 1972 Print E-mail

Due for publication in May 2020 (a revised publication date from the originally quoted September 2019) is a new book about the band: Pink Floyd Scandinavia 1967 – 1972.

Immediately after Pink Floyd's debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, Pink Floyd went to Aarhus, Stockholm and Copenhagen on their first tour outside Britain. With their cutting-edge psychedelic music and shows they created something completely new and exciting wherever they went. This book follows them on their early tours in Scandinavia at humble venues to their return in the following years as they rose to become one of the biggest rock acts in the world.

Created by the Unseen Nordic Archives, the 176 page book promises an extraordinary collection of unknown and rarely seen photos from these tours - more than 200 pictures in total - added with new interviews from many of the key people involved and newspaper articles from local Danish and Swedish papers at the time.

The Unseen Nordic Archive series of books enjoy access to an archive of over 500,000 images from Scandinavian photographers and newly researched interview material from the people who were there.

Certainly sounds very interesting; we should have more about this in due course, and hopefully will be reviewing it too. In the meantime, the various European Amazon stores are offering the book as a pre-order, through these links: Amazon UK, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Spain and Amazon Italy. Should you nearest Amazon store not have this book on offer, feel free to use an alternative one as they all ship books internationally.

UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances the book has been delayed, but the publishers are hoping it will be available in the autumn of 2020 (so, presumably around October). We will keep you posted about this book.

Reminder: Limited blue vinyl 25th anniversary 2LP of Pink Floyd's The Division Bell Print E-mail

Pink Floyd's The Division Bell - limited blue vinyl 2LP 25th anniversary editionA reminder, should you need it: just three weeks to go until the following is released, and it seems to be selling very well already! Helping to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pink Floyd's The Division Bell, a limited release of the album in translucent blue, heavyweight vinyl as a 2LP set, is coming on June 7th, 2019. It echoes the original limited blue vinyl release by Columbia Records in 1994.

It will be joining the other albums released by the band's new label - Pink Floyd Records - and will bear catalogue number PFRLP 31. Featuring the 2014 master by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and the late Doug Sax of the Mastering Lab, California, it comes as a double LP (as did the 2014 black vinyl release) to ensure all the songs are presented in full. The original 1994 single vinyl release required the songs to be edited to fit.

As expected, the packaging is of high quality again; the records are housed in a gatefold sleeve with four different images of specially-created heads, and two full-colour lyric/image inner bags. On its original release, the album debuted at number 1 in the UK, US, Australian and New Zealand album charts, reaching the top spot in six other countries, and to date has sold over 12 million copies.

At the time, David Gilmour said: "The three of us went into Britannia Row Studios, and improvised for two weeks. Playing together and starting from scratch was interesting and exciting, it kick-started the album and the process was very good, it was collaborative and felt more cohesive."

Ordering links: We're sure it's going to be one that many of you won't want to miss out on. If you do want to add this to your collection, please use these direct links to help support the running of Brain Damage: Amazon UKAmazon.comAmazon CanadaAmazon FranceAmazon GermanyAmazon Spain and Amazon Italy. Should your chosen Amazon store be sold out, or another 'branch' of Amazon have it cheaper, bear in mind they ship records internationally, so can be worth placing your order with another Amazon in either of these circumstances, so you don't miss out!

With the publication this month of the new, limited edition book from Wymer Publishing in the UK, called "Pink Floyd - Captured Through Time", we have a special competition for you to win one of two copies of this book, which is an edition of just 500.

Captured Through Time is a photographic celebration of the band that takes you on a journey from the psychedelic, avant-garde sixties to the present day including off stage shots of all band members.

The publishers note that many of the photos have never been published in print before, including a sequence of shots from the Animals tour in 1977 that have only just been developed from the original negatives and digitally restored for this publication.

In total, over 100 glorious images of Floyd both on and off stage through the decades are included in this large format hardback book. Housed in a bespoke, custom-made, buckram presentation box with holographic block foil, it also includes 3 prints, ideal for framing and is strictly limited to 500 worldwide.

You can order the book directly from the publishers at WymerUK.co.uk. The book will not be available to purchase elsewhere, so this will be the only place you'll be able to get a copy - unless you are a winner in our latest competition.

COMPETITION - WIN A COPY!
With thanks to the publishers, two lucky BD visitors will each get a free copy of the book, in our latest competition. To enter, all you need to do is answer this question correctly:

  • Pink Floyd's 1977 tour went under which name, later to be found on the album of The Wall?

Email your answer to  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  with the subject line of "Captured Through Time Book competition", and include your name and full mailing address. Our congratulations to Andrew Cakebread, from Shipston on Stour, UK, and Eric Van den Bossche, from Sint-Joris-Weert in Belgium, who were the two lucky winners from the many hundreds of correct entries received here. Well done you two; your books will be on their way to you directly from the publishers shortly. Commiserations to everyone else who entered and better luck in our next competition!
