The Borders Book Festival took place toward the end of last week, and the weekend, between 12th-15th June 2014, in Melrose (close to
Edinburgh), Scotland. As part of the festival, on the first day Nick Mason was in
conversation with comedian and impressionist, Rory Bremner, at the Born in the Borders Marquee.
Brain Damage reader Tom Dyce was there, and kindly reported back on the event. "Just returned from an excellent evening at Melrose, where Nick was in conversation with Rory Bremner. A thoroughly entertaining chat with lots of good humour and a great atmosphere deep in the Scottish Borders.
"Nick covered much of his time with Pink Floyd from the early days right up to the present state of affairs. There was also a question and answer session which was a chance for the very knowlegable audience to pose those questions they always wanted to ask. Afterwards Nick took time to sign books for the very large crowd, all in a great event."
Tom also shared some pictures which we're pleased to bring you here. Just click on the thumbnails...

This week saw the official launch of a new exhibition at London's Olympus-Rockarchive Image Space Gallery, celebrating the work of one of the world's greatest album sleeve designers. With Jill Furmanovsky and long-term StormStudios lynchpin Rupert Truman in attendance for a Q&A after a screening of Roddy Bogawa's wonderful Taken By Storm documentary, the gallery was packed for an absorbing evening (see their Twitter feed for a couple of pictures from the night).
Stormy Sees provides a journey through some of the more iconic images created by the late, great Storm Thorgerson and his team. Some of the images on display until Sunday, June 29th, give fresh insights into the detail of the work - Muse's Absolution, and Pink Floyd's The Division Bell cover, for example, are shown in very large format versions. Other prime examples of Floyd on display include a Liquid Dark Side, the PULSE cover, and Storm's wire frame cow recreation of the Atom Heart Mother cover - his creation to mark the album's 40th anniversary in reaction to this milestone not being officially recognised. Elsewhere in the gallery, you can also enjoy works such as Jill Furmanovsky's wonderfully atmospheric shot of David Gilmour atop the wall, playing Comfortably Numb, during the original Wall shows at the start of the 1980s.
As the graphic notes, Storm and his teams over the years (in Hipgnosis, and later, Storm Studios) were responsible for the designs of most of many people's album collections, and seeing them properly printed in very high quality, in larger formats than the record cover (or indeed, the CD cover) gives them new life, new vibrancy. If you are in, or visiting, central London, the Image Space Gallery is definitely worth a wander around.
It is found at 199 Bishopsgate, which is just along from Liverpool Street Station (so, served by the Underground and local buses), and entry is free. It is open Tuesdays to Saturdays between 10:30am - 6:30pm, and Sundays from 12 noon - 5pm.

Will Shutes, co-author of the superlative Barrett book, is exhibiting the extremely rare 1969 film 'Psychedelia' at the Room&Book Art book fair at London's ICA this weekend. The 8mm Warhol-esque film was shot by Kevin Whitney, and it has sat under his bed for 40 years. It features Syd Barrett amongst other faces from the London underground scene of the time, and has only been seen once since its original exhibition in 1970. Entry to the fair - including the screening - is free.
To coincide with this rare celluloid Syd appearance, the publishers of Barrett are offering the book at a special price until Friday (June 13th). The £300 Signature Limited Edition is just £200 (33% off the regular price) and the £70 Classic Edition is just £40 (more than 40% off!).
Looking further forward, on July 1st, Rhino are releasing Syd Barrett's The Madcap Laughs, Barrett, and Opel albums on heavyweight 180g vinyl. With the resurgence of interest and take-up of vinyl, these high quality new editions are sure to be popular. Here are the direct links at the Amazon stores so you can pre-order them if you'd like to add these to your collection, whilst they are available:
Don't forget, these will all qualify for their pre-order price guarantee, ensuring you pay (automatically) the lowest price they have the item on offer for between your order, and the release date. Using our Amazon links also helps us hugely!

Our very best wishes go to Gerald Scarfe today as he celebrates his birthday. Gerald, of course, is a graphic artist with a long history with the Floyd, from the 1974 tour programme caricature, through to his most famous work on The Wall, and beyond that, working with Roger Waters on his Pros and Cons project. Many happy returns to Gerald on this special day.
As a reminder, almost three years ago, published in paperback, was Gerald's superb "The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall", which is the authorized, definitive book about the project and includes new commentaries from the surviving members of Pink Floyd: Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason, together with the director of the film, Sir Alan Parker. Roger Waters has written the foreword. The album imagery, stage performances and film were created in close collaboration
with Gerald Scarfe, and his massive archive includes original storyboards, animation cells, concept drawings, models and other three-dimensional material together with photographs of the creation and staging of the live performances and the filming of The Wall. It even covers the 2010-2013 tour. Our review and full ordering details can be found here.
The accompanying photo of Gerald Scarfe and Roger Waters in Scarfe's studio, shows them going through material for the book [click the thumbnail to view it in more detail]. It's a lovely, personal look at work on the book, and was taken by Jane Scarfe (Asher), and online exclusively here at Brain Damage!
The photo accompanying this article was taken by, and is copyright of, Jane Scarfe, and is a Brain Damage online exclusive. No unauthorised
use elsewhere, please.
Finally, in case you've not seen these yet, here's a trio of exclusive video interviews done for Brain Damage by Gerald, talking about The Wall...

Six years ago, Roger Waters recorded a song for the Fundación Alas,
a foundation to help improve health and education for children in Latin America. Two years ago, Roger, who was in Buenos Aires performing a record breaking set of nine Wall concerts at the Estadio River Plate, chose the city to film the promo video for the song, which is called "The Child
Will Fly".
Working with the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and with the support of the Spanish International Cooperation Agency, Alas made a contribution of $2 million for 22 early childhood centers serving more than 2,000 children in neighborhoods with high poverty levels.
The theme song was intended to help raise awareness about the importance of early education as a tool for children, with financial and cultural projects hopefully opening a world of greater possibilities. The track features the collaboration with Roger of different international and Latin artists such as Shakira, Eric Clapton, Pedro Aznar and Gustavo Cerati, who have worked actively with Alas.
The video features the artistic supervision of Roger Waters and was directed by Argentine Diego Kaplan and has just become available online - as you can see below. If you want to have a quick look behind the scenes of the shoot, you can do so through this link [link removed]. Our thanks to Nico Ibanez, Martin Geyer, Stevie Hunter and Claudio David Knaup for letting us know about the availability of this new footage!
UPDATE: both videos have now been removed from Youtube due to copyright claims. Seems they shouldn't have been posted on the video sharing service by the various parties that did this.
