Ron Geesin: An Improvised Life - documentary and Q&A Saturday Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Wednesday, 30 September 2015

Just a reminder for you: on Saturday (October 3rd) is the world premiere of Ron Geesin - An Improvised Life which is a new, one hour documentary that explores the life of this remarkable, yet largely unsung, artist through a mixture of live performance, interviews, film extracts and archive material. The film includes never before seen footage of Ron Geesin and David Gilmour at the 2008 Atom Heart Mother concert at London's Cadogan Hall, which featured blistering guitar and pedal steel work from David.

The film has interviews with David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Pete Townshend, Peter Gabriel, Robert Wyatt and Bridget St John amongst many others.

Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with the director, Tom McInnes, and with Ron Geesin himself. An event not to be missed!

More information on the documentary can be found at GeesinImprovLife.com; the special premiere event is part of the Doc'n'Roll Film Festival, at Picturehouse Central, in London on Saturday October 3rd.

Roger Waters - The Wall: New York World Premiere report Print E-mail

Roger Waters - The Wall movie world premiere in New YorkTwo weeks ago (September 14) I had the pleasure of attending the 'sneak preview' of the new motion picture concert / documentary film by Roger Waters and co-creator Sean Evans titled 'Roger Waters - The Wall' (Picturehouse Entertainment/Fathom Events). The film was screened to a small audience in an intimate 88-seat theater in New York, not visible from the street. Fitted with a state-of-the-art Dolby Atmos sound system, The Screening Room was an ideal location to view the film for the very first time. This particular theater is not open to the public. It's used for private screenings only.

Dolby 88 features Dolby Atmos, the most significant development in cinema audio since surround sound. It creates a natural and life-like environment that reflects the artist's intent. Dolby Atmos employs overhead speakers, accommodates up to 128 audio streams, and enables sound to move smoothly and precisely around the theatre.

What made the evening even more memorable, is that Roger Waters was present for the film's entire screening! He gave a short welcome speech from the front row and thanked everyone for coming. He took a seat three rows in front of me and fully enjoyed himself as we all did! Once the film had ended and the house lights were turned on, he turned to the audience and again expressed his thanks to us for coming. He waved goodnight and exited through a side door.

Fast forward to last evening (September 28), and I find myself directly across the street at NY's Ziegfeld Theatre for the 'world premiere' of the same film - another noteworthy New York City Roger Waters event. I check-in at the security desk, confirm I'm on the VIP guest list, pick-up my entry ticket at the box office, and make my way to the lobby to look for familiar faces...

David Gilmour on UK television tomorrow night Print E-mail

Later....with Jools HollandJust a quick head's up for those of you in the UK - tomorrow evening (Tuesday, September 29th) BBC2 TV hosts the latest episode in the Later Live...With Jools Holland series. Staggeringly it is listed as series 47, and more specifically episode 3.

As the Radio Times notes, "Former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour visits Jools, with songs from his new album Rattle That Lock. In a YouTube clip about the title song, Gilmour reveals that it was inspired by a jingle used on French railway announcements ("I was in Aix-en-Provence station visiting friends…"). He also mentions, in a nice prog-rock touch, that the lyrics are "inspired by book two of Paradise Lost by John Milton". Other guests, possibly not inspired by French railways, include the Weeknd, the Libertines and a bizarre Ukrainian quartet called DakhaBraka. Three women and one man swap instruments (drums accordions, cello, etc) and sing brilliant shrieky harmonies. It’s worth hearing."

The show airs tomorrow night at 10pm UK time, on BBC2 and BBC2 HD, which is viewable via digital terrestrial, the various digital platforms including Virgin Media and Sky, and online at the BBC website. It will also be available to watch on demand via the BBC's iPlayer service after it has aired on TV.

There is an extended repeat showing, lasting just over an hour, as Later With Jools Holland which airs on Friday night (October 2nd) at 11:30pm UK again on BBC2 and BBC2 HD. Our thanks to Dave Carlin, Mike Ford and Adrian Culley for letting us know.

David Gilmour - London ticket auction

A new charity auction for the Liberty Choir is currently running. The Choir provide the backing vocals on the title track of David Gilmour's new album, Rattle That Lock, and David has given them a pair of tickets for the sold-out show taking place at London's Royal Albert Hall this coming Friday, October 2nd.

The Liberty Choir is a rehabilitation project that includes former Wandsworth Prison inmates and local singers, and David told the BBC back in August that the choir gives prisoners "real hope and optimism".

Tickets for David's shows sold in minutes, so this is a great opportunity to get a pair of genuine tickets whilst helping a charity that David is a keen supporter of. To see more, or to place your bid, visit www.jumblebee.co.uk/dgticketbid now. The auction closes in just over two days (at time of writing).

David Gilmour and Polly Samson - In The Studio interview Print E-mail

In The Studio with RedbeardThe latest episode of long-running, popular US syndicated radio show, In The Studio with Redbeard sits down with David Gilmour and his wife (and lyricist) Polly Samson to discuss all things Rattle That Lock.

With David singing Polly's lyrics, it requires a different approach to your own words, as David points out. "It takes thought and it takes concentration. I mean you have to live, and breathe, and believe the words you’re saying, and with most of Roger's brilliant lyrics and with Polly's lyrics too, I find that I can do that. I hope that I do it justice. But it is something you often think about. But, you know, you're forcing yourself to be that person who is using those words as if they were your own. I'm only borrowing them. I mean I've written enough songs with words of my own to know how it’s done."

The interview segment of the show (minus the music itself) can be heard in full through this direct link.
