Just published - by an Australian company, printed in China, and seemingly available in most countries, Pink Floyd written by James Ridley is a large format book akin to a sturdy magazine, running to some 92 pages.
The book is full of pictures, many filling double-page spreads (although the occasional blown up shot then struggles with overall sharpness and clarity). The text scampers through the band's history, also taking into account solo activity, pulling out quotes from various past interviews and documentaries - there is no new interview material in the book.
Generally, the material covers seems a little curious, with less obvious things getting prominence over more expected (and important) ground. There are also inaccuracies within the (at times) rather thin commentary, kicking off most noticeably with the assertion that Pink Floyd have remained with EMI as their only record company since signing with them in 1967. Not sure what Warners would make of that!
Elsewhere, and with no obvious reason, there's a double page spread right at the back with just the track listing of The Dark Side Of The Moon, in large type. Odd in itself, but a good example of how the proofreader must've gone for a tea break: for side two, it lists side one's tracks for the second time.
Despite our disappointment with it, we've already had some very positive emails and Facebook posts about this publication, so it clearly has an audience amongst some happy Floyd fans. It is maybe one to see before you buy, if you can. If you DO want to buy this, it can be bought via these links: Amazon UK, Amazon.com, Amazon Canada, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Espana and Amazon Italy. Orders for North America should be open shortly.

Just published is a new video, showing an edit of Jill Furmanovsky in conversation with Storm Thorgerson from the nice people at Rockarchive. For those who need reminding, Jill is one of the world’s top rock photographers, and first took pictures of Pink Floyd back in January 1972, when she was backstage at the Floyd’s Brighton Dome concert. Since then she spent time with them on the road in the 1970s, taking many iconic and also endearing shots. Her stunning picture of David Gilmour on top of The Wall in New York in 1980, grainy and black and white, is the defining image from those concerts. A few years ago, she sat down with Storm to ask him about his various covers for the band, and you can see the result now:
For those visiting London, Rockarchive have announced a photography exhibition, named after Jill Furmanovsky's book The Moment, published 20 years ago, about the art of rock photography, between Saturday, May 16th - Thursday, June 4th, 2015.
The exhibition features images of many of the artists who have performed at the Royal Albert Hall, taken by some of the world's leading music photographers. Many of the images, signed by both the photographer and the stars they feature, will be up for auction on the opening day (May 16th) at a special launch event. The exhibition can be viewed when attending performances at the Royal Albert Hall, or on the following free open days: Saturday May 16th, 11am - 4pm; Sunday May 17th 11am - 4pm; Saturday May 23rd 11am - 4pm; Saturday May 30th 11am - 4pm. Entry is free - enter through door 12.

Hitting selected UK stores last week was "Pink Floyd: The Ultimate Music Guide", a new, expanded - or rather, "deluxe remastered edition" - of a special from the UK's Uncut Magazine which they originally published in June 2011. They are now labelling this as the first in a set of 'bookazines': more of a large format, perfect bound book than magazine.
As with the previous edition, this is a 148 page special devoted to Pink Floyd's recorded output over the years, and this edition features no advertising to bulk out its pages, enabling them to bring the story up to date within the same page count as before.
The magazine includes classic interviews with all of the band members from the archives of Melody Maker and the New Musical Express (part of the same publishers as Uncut). There are also new, full reviews of every album complete with background to each record, and what was occurring in the band's lives at the time. These all come with some great pictures of the band live, and in the studio, from 1966 onwards.
Whilst the first edition ended around the time of David Gilmour guesting at Roger's Wall concert held at London's O2 Arena, this new version includes Uncut's coverage of The Endless River - an extensive article and interview. A fascinating insight into the background and creation of the album, and if you didn't get the normal monthly magazine which included this, at the time, this provides the perfect opportunity to get hold of it. The rest of the magazine is well designed too, and fascinating - well worth snapping up particularly if you don't have some/all of the material within.
You can purchase the magazine in selected UK stores now, and you can order it online through this direct link.

Back on March 8th we told you about David Gilmour joining his wife Polly Samson for the upcoming 2015 Borris House Festival of Writing and Ideas.
The three-day event, which takes place in June, is held in Co. Carlow, Ireland. Polly's new book, A Kindness, was published last month to much critical acclaim.
David is set to join Polly in a discussion, which now has the fitting title "Louder Than Words", about their songwriting
partnership, on June 6th at midday. Polly wrote lyrics for The Division Bell, and for Louder
Than Words on The Endless River. She also contributed towards On An
Island and is doing the same for David's forthcoming album, due in
September to coincide with the recently announced concerts.
Polly told the Irish Times: "A friend of ours curates the festival and
asked if I could get David to come along. She works so hard on it that
even without consulting David, I said I'm sure we could get him to do
it. And when I asked, he readily agreed."
Polly continued: "I was always reluctant to be open about it, because it
felt like the domain of men with guitars. But David talked a lot about
it in the interviews he did for The Endless River, and it was almost
like being outed. Then there was suddenly a few articles about writers
who were lyricists, especially after Michael Chabon wrote lyrics for
Mark Ronson. It turned out Kazuo Ishiguro wrote lyrics and then I was
included too, so then it felt okay to talk about - it felt like there
were other writers who were lyricists, and we're allowed to do more than
one type of writing."
The festival runs from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th June, and is held at Borris House. This is said to be one of the most spectacular houses in
Ireland. It sits at the foot of the Blackstairs Mountains, on the banks
of the River Barrow, in the small village of Borris in the hinterland of
South County Carlow.
Until now, only weekend tickets have been on sale, but now you can buy tickets for individual days, through VisualCarlow.ie, which directly links to the day that David and Polly will be appearing. Our thanks to Tom B for letting us know that these are now available.
UPDATE, May 6th: Individual tickets are now available for the David and Polly session alone - cheaper than the full day tickets. You can order yours through this direct link. Our thanks to Shane O'Neill for letting us know.

Some great news for all of you who were hoping to see David Gilmour's upcoming concert in Oberhausen, Germany, on September 19th, 2015, which is part of his ten date - and sold out - tour, to coincide with the release of his new album (which is as yet untitled, and no firm date of release is available at the moment). Due to finalising of the production design, a limited number of seats have just been made available for the Oberhausen show, via this link to Eventim.de. Tickets will be in the top price bracket of €100 (Euros) and the third price bracket of €75 (Euros), and are subject to booking fees.
There will be a limit of 2 tickets per person/purchase. As with other venues, and in an effort to cut down on ticket touting (the selling of tickets for vast profit) the name of the purchaser will be printed on both tickets, so the purchaser will HAVE to attend the show. Please note: tickets are not transferable, returnable or refundable under any circumstances. Terms and conditions apply.
Sales will be open to the public from 10am on Friday morning (April 24th), so please place your order now if you want to attend this show.
