WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD!

Do not read on if you don't want surprises to be spoilt, regarding what the band played, and what happened as the night unfolded!

Night sixty of the 2012 tour, and the end is in sight, with the tour wrapping up in less than a month's time in Quebec.

The Ottawa Citizen were there, and liked what they saw. "Waters and his backing band performed the 1979 concept album in its entirety Monday night at Scotiabank Place – a return trip after The Wall’s first visit to Ottawa last year - accompanied by captivating visual effects that have given the music and lyrics a new meaning. Afterward, before leaving the stage, he would reflect on who he was those many years ago. “I was really bad at being in big rooms like this with lots of really nice people being really nice to me,” Waters, now 68, told his admirers. “But times have changed.”

"The Wall is a record that has grown but not aged. More than 30 years after the release of the classic double-album, it’s evolved from a story of inner conflict and alienation to an angry assault on war, capitalism and poverty.

"The revised version of The Wall lent much of itself to the ideas of war and state terror; Waters dedicated a song to Jean Charles de Menezes, a Brazilian man who in 2005 was shot in the head seven times when London police mistakenly identified him as terrorist bomber. Waters also spoke of Iraqi photojournalist Namir Noor-Eldeen and assistant Saeed Chmagh, who were killed, among others, by an American airstrike in Baghdad after Noor-Eldeen’s camera was mistaken for a weapon. Yet with a glimmer of hope, the animation on the wall also showed moving scenes of returning soldiers surprising their loved ones.

"Roger Waters’ The Wall Live is a tale reborn with a new agenda. He may have torn down his own wall, but now he sees a bigger one behind it. And as the final track came to a crescendo, down it came, too."

Last night was amazing!! We got our tickets through the rogerwaters.com presale. We knew that we were on the floor, at a front of a section but could not tell from the seating chart where our seats were. When we arrived at the venue last night to pick them up, we discovered that we were in the centre of the centre section in the front row!! Oh how I wish I had my big nikon with me!! I did have my point and shoot coolpix and managed to get some good shots until my battery went during comfortably numb! I pulled out my phone and shot the last bit using my blackberry.

I've never been in the front row for a big show like this and it was incredible. The Ottawa show was much smaller than the Toronto show. They used the wider wall at the Rogers Centre so the projections were slightly different but I have to say, we were so engrossed in what the band were doing that the projections were secondary. Just before the wall was to come down, the security guys asked us all to move away from the railing. They needed at least 2 feet clearance from the railing when the bricks fell. Everyone sat down and I'm glad I was seated. When the wall came down, we felt a powerful wind and could smell wood and cardboard dust. I think if I'd been standing, it would have pushed me back into my seat. Incredible.

Roger seems so happy on this tour. Both nights, at the end of the show, when he is introducing the boys in the band, he is so full of joy and love, it's quite touching. He's really feeding off the love he is getting from the audience. He clearly had everyone in the palm of his hand.

Our vantage point allowed us to see things that we'd never seen before. At one point, toward the end of the show (possibly during waiting for the worms - can't recall 100%) Roger took the microphone and held it in front of his crotch and "Jim Morrison'd" it. VERY funny.

Firstly, respect and thanks to Roger Waters for playing at so many Canadian cities on this tour and, especially, for playing here in Ottawa. Despite the fact that Ottawa is the nation’s capital city, it is often overlooked by the major bands when they are on tour and Ottawans usually have to travel to Toronto or Montreal to see some decent concerts. Not only did Roger Waters play all three of these cities in 2010 but he’s back to play them all again in 2012 and, just for good measure, he’s even playing a huge outdoor concert in the almost always overlooked Quebec City next month.

Anyway, I was fortunate enough to have seen his Wall concert here in Ottawa in 2010 but, due to logistical issues at that time, I had to make do with a limited view ticket. This time, however, I was determined to get a decent seat in the very impressive Scotiabank Place arena. Hence, I bought my ticket as soon as they came up for sale and opted for a mid-price seat that would provide a very different vantage point to the seat that I previously had and was virtually on top of the wall itself.

Luckily, my new vantage point in Section 203 was great. Looking face-on almost perpendicular to the wall and raised up a couple of levels above the floor seating, it was a great place to take in the absolutely stunning projections on the wall. I have to say, though, that the wall itself didn’t look as wide as I had expected it to from this location in the arena; maybe it’s because of all those photos I’ve seen of the recent stadium concerts with the wider wall that made it look smaller in this arena setting.

Unfortunately, being further away from the wall means you don’t really get to see the individual members of the band performing, other than Roger Waters himself. It is great that some of the live footage is now projected onto the wall though, obviously, again, this is almost all of Roger himself.

Musically, this time round, I particularly enjoyed Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2, Mother, What Shall We do Now, Hey You and also one of the best versions of Comfortably Numb I’ve ever heard live (and I’ve witnessed quite a few live versions of this song since my first Floyd concert in 1980!). Visually, this time I particularly liked the great projection effects during The Last Few Bricks, Comfortably Numb and The Trial.

On the negative side, compared to last time, the crowd seemed a little more subdued. Maybe, it’s because most people in attendance had seen the concert before. Alternatively, maybe the crowd were simply drowned out by the sheer volume of the music. Last time I thought the sound was excellent but this time it really was too loud. I even resorted to earplugs after Comfortably Numb! Unfortunately, by then, the (hopefully temporary!) damage had been done – my ears are still ringing now, almost 24 hours after the concert ended.

My only other gripe with the current Wall concert is that a lot of the imagery and the message are now, IMHO, overly-political. This doesn’t always sit well with the ‘story’ of The Wall. However, if the politics are the main thing that Roger wants to promote, maybe what the concert really needs is to replace some of the weaker Wall songs with some of the better songs from the subsequent Pink Floyd album, The Final Cut. Certainly this would be very interesting from a musical perspective. It’s such a shame that The Final Cut album was never toured by the Messrs Waters, Gilmour and Mason, who made up the three-man Pink Floyd at the time of the album’s release in 1983. Still, there’s always 2013 for this to happen….30th anniversary and all that!!!!
