Storm Thorgerson talks about Royal Mail Pink Floyd stamp Print E-mail

Storm ThorgersonThis evening, on the BBC Radio Scotland Newsdrive show, Storm Thorgerson is interviewed over the use of Pink Floyd's The Division Bell cover on the selection of stamps that the Royal Mail are bring out, celebrating Classic Album Covers.

The five minute interview has Storm "a bit narked!" He takes clear exception over their choice of The Division Bell over other of the band's covers, and notes that it would have been "far better to do Dark Side [of the Moon]" as the artwork would have been much more suitable on the small surface area of a stamp.

However, there is a technical reason behind their choice: the Royal Mail couldn't consider 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' as a stamp, because there's too much black ink in the design, and that renders inoperative the phosphor strip that enables automatic stamp sorting. The designs themselves were chosen independently of the respective bands and management teams.

Hear the full interview for the next seven days via the BBC iPlayer - wind forward to 1 hour and 52 minutes into the show for Storm's bit. Our thanks to Joe McGuire for the tip-off!
