COMMENTS

Due to the critical success of the four initial shows in May 2018, held in tiny venues in London's Camden and Putney, Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets announced a full European tour for September that year. The expanded shows for the full tour were even more highly acclaimed, and it came as no surprise when further dates for 2019 were announced. The insatiable demand for more dates, in more locations, has resulted in the band carrying on from where they left off, with shows for 2022 taking the music to new fans, as well as those who have already experienced the show, eager for more - particularly with the halt to concerts due to the Coronavirus pandemic!

Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets brings together some familiar names, all great musicians: joining Nick are Gary Kemp and Lee Harris on guitars, Guy Pratt on bass, and Dom Beken on keyboards. Kemp is best known for his work with Spandau Ballet, Harris as having played guitar with The Blockheads (Ian Dury's band), Pratt needs no introduction, and Beken is principally known for his work with The Orb, and Transit Kings (with Pratt). The band will be playing early Pink Floyd songs.

This is a unique opportunity to experience Pink Floyd's celebrated and significant early body of work played live including songs from albums 'The Piper At The Gates of Dawn' and 'A Saucerful Of Secrets'.

The regular sale of tickets starts on FRIDAY, June 11th 2021 at 12pm (local time), via Ticketmaster, and the venues themselves.

Do not read on if you don't want surprises to be spoilt, regarding what the band played!

Last night in Dublin, Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets kicked off their 2022 tour - much delayed due to Covid, as it was supposed to start in the spring of 2020 - in some style, from initial word we're getting just a couple of hours or so after the show finished. We'll bring you some pictures from the show, shortly.

CONCERT REVIEW and PICTURES by BD CONTRIBUTOR, Martin Kilbride

Spoilers below!

The guys were really match fit, especially Nick, who showed true dexterity on Echoes in particular. This was the first night of the tour, and Nick joked it took 50 years to return to Ireland after Pink Floyd's show in The Arcadia in Cork (sidestepping the fact he joined Roger here in 2006), and was a rescheduled date from the original Saucerful Of Secrets date from April 2020.

Confusingly, Little Mix also had a show in 2021 in the Convention Centre which was cancelled and was rescheduled also to the 13th April, but to the 3Arena instead, so Nick joked "Oh, apologies to anyone who's here tonight expecting to see Little Mix!"

Part one of the set began with One of These Days, Arnold Layne and a rousing Fearless. A trio of songs paying tribute to Syd followed, with Vegetable Man, Lucifer Sam and Candy and a Currant Bun, where Nick explained Vegetable Man was an incomplete demo which they finished because "It was a nice song and a shame not to do something with it", and went on to explain "The original title of 'Candy...' was 'Let's Roll Another One' which had to be changed otherwise the BBC wouldn't play it!" He honoured Syd by saying without him, they wouldn't be there tonight, nor would there have even been a Pink Floyd at all.

Guy introduced Remember A Day, saying "This was written by Rick, who is also being remembered tonight, and who is also the grandfather of my son" (a real treat to see and hear this one played!) and then Set The Controls for the Heart of the Sun (with great vocals from Guy, and Gong from Nick!) closed part one.

After a short break, Interstellar, Astronomy and The Nile Song kicked off part two. Burning Bridges and Childhood's End followed with vocals from Gary, who announced after it was great to be back in Dublin, saying he lived here (on the Stillorgan Road!) in the 80's, and in fact wrote Through The Barricades there.

Nick explained a little about putting A Saucerful of Secrets together, saying they wanted to play with other people they admired, and admitted Gary probably thought he was getting Roger Waters, and Nick thought he was getting Tony Hadley!

A blinding rendition of Echoes followed (Lee Harris here excelled on the Echoes themselves), where, to be fair to the Dublin audience, you could hear a pin drop. Absolutely no whooping or hollering, shouting out lyrics and even the applause waited until the final notes ended.

The encore was Saucerful (where Guy quipped "A Saucerful Of Secrets by A Saucerful of Secrets...what more could you want!") followed by Bike, and a request from Dom to take a photo of us, the audience, as a memento of the first tour night. Amazing set, amazing sound, and they kept "If" and "Atom Heart Mother" too!
