Last Friday, to celebrate the release of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here 50 on various formats, special pop-up stores were opened for a limited time in London, Los Angeles, Barcelona and Paris in conjunction with News & Coffee. Two other locations also had pop-ups, in Berlin and Milan. They had an exclusive limited edition white vinyl WYWH, and excitingly for us, a numbered and limited WYWH50 edition of Brain Damage fanzine, back in print for the first time in 30 years! The magazine's contents were curated by BD founder Glenn Povey. BD regular Dave Gaylor made the London outlet his mission, early on Friday morning, and here's his report and pictures...
On arriving at Granary Square behind Kings Cross station in London I found the small pop up coffee shop with Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here signs. This was at 06:20am and at that time there were already nine people in a queue. Soon after I was joined by a friend, who is also a regular at Pink Floyd concerts and events, Chris Leith.
The kiosk was due to open at 8:00am and meeting up with Chris meant that time went extremely quickly, and in no time at all staff arrived to set up the kiosk. Barriers were put in place to assist the queuing which had gradually increased in number. At the time the kiosk opened there were approximately sixty people in the queue.
The prize items available were the white vinyl limited edition version of the 50th anniversary promotion of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here LP. There was also a special limited edition of the Brain Damage magazine as well as such items as mugs, t-shirts and other promotional material. The items were supplied in a special paper carrier bag and a cup of free coffee was provided as part of the purchase with a Pink Floyd Welcome to the Machine stamp on each coffee cup.
Customers were permitted to purchase up to three copies of the white vinyl LP which was great news as it enabled me to secure a couple of copies for friends who were unable to make the event or in some cases were too lazy to get out of bed! I left shortly after purchasing my items and the queue seemed to be moving quite quickly. No doubt all those who had arrived early would have been able to buy their wish list as well.
Our thanks to Dave for sharing the above, and pictures below, with us. A very limited number of leftover copies of the magazine, and the vinyl, can be bought through the Official Pink Floyd store.
