Brain Damage and A Fleeting Glimpse

Pink Floyd 1987WELCOME TO THE 26th YEAR OF BRAIN DAMAGE, YOUR PINK FLOYD, DAVID GILMOUR, NICK MASON, SYD BARRETT, RICHARD WRIGHT AND ROGER WATERS NEWS RESOURCE!

It's 2025! This year sees the 50th anniversary of Wish You Were Here, which is an incredible thought; where does the time go?!

We now know that Pink Floyd At Pompeii MCMLXXII on Blu-ray, 2CD, 2LP, DVD, digital and cinema screenings are on their way, with the releases on May 2nd, and the cinema screenings shortly before. NOT to be missed!

There's also been three Record Store Day releases released on April 12th, from David Gilmour, Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets, and Roger Waters which are also definitely worth tracking down, either in a participating store, or online, now that RSD has finished.

Last year, David Gilmour's superb new album, Luck and Strange, was released in a variety of formats, and a selection of coloured vinyls. A limited number of concert dates thrilled crowds in Brighton and London, England, Rome, Italy, and Los Angeles and New York, USA. Rome shows were filmed for release at some point...watch this space!

The Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets 2024 Set The Controls tour revealed a band in even better form than the 2022/23 shows which managed to exceed everyone's hopes and expectations! Our sincerest hopes are that they continue, but in the meantime, there's the RSD release, and the earlier live recording from London's Roundhouse on Blu-ray, DVD/2CD, and 2LP which is really excellent.

Of course, Roger Waters read three extracts from his memoirs in October 2023 at the London Palladium, so it might not be too long before that is published...he's also working on his new album based around The Bar - we'll let you know as soon as we get all the info!

Gerald Scarfe - The Making of Pink Floyd The WallOur competition to win three copies of Gerald Scarfe's "The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall", one of which is specially signed by Gerald himself, is now closed.

As a reminder, "The Making of Pink Floyd: The Wall" is the wonderful authorized, definitive book about the project and includes new commentaries from the surviving members of Pink Floyd: Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason, together with the director of the film, Sir Alan Parker. Roger Waters has written the foreword. The album imagery, stage performances and film were created in close collaboration with Gerald Scarfe, and his massive archive includes original storyboards, animation cells, concept drawings, models and other three-dimensional material together with photographs of the creation and staging of the live performances and the filming of The Wall.

Three lucky Brain Damage readers will shortly have their own copy of this book - were you one of the winners? Read on to find out!

In the book, published by Weidenfeld and Nicholson/Orion Books in the UK, and Da Capo books in North America, Gerald also relates his own experiences of working with the band from the early days of Wish You Were Here to the Pros and Cons Of Hitchhiking with Roger Waters, after his break with the other band members, as well as his work for the new live show of The Wall. Thirty years after the first live performance was staged, Roger Waters is of course currently on the road with The Wall for a multi-city tour of the US from September 2010 to be followed in the spring of 2011 by a jaunt around Europe, bringing the album and the band right back into the headlines.

Our competition proved tricky for many, who possibly didn't read the question closely enough. We asked "Which fictional character was "Pink" originally based on?" and many of you didn't take the "fictional" bit into account, giving answers such as Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Pink Floyd as a whole. You also gave the character's full name, again not what we were after! However, a significant number of you knew that the fictional character that "Pink" was originally based on was Mr Punch, from the traditional Punch & Judy stories. Gerald drew hundreds of pictures with Mr Punch as the basis for Pink, until one day Roger changed his mind so Gerald had to scrap all that hard work!

We went through all the correct entries, and our independent checker picked out the following three lucky people:

  • Tim Bader, Ohio, USA
  • Valerie Livingston, Somerville, MA, USA
  • SIGNED COPY - Barry Radcliffe, Northants, UK

Our congratulations to these three, and our commiserations to those who weren't so lucky this time around.

If Lady Luck didn't smile down on you, you can secure your copy of this wonderful book now, saving up to 37% off the retail price, by ordering from Amazon UK, Amazon US/International, Amazon Canada, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, or Play.com.
