Out today (March 24th), as a follow-up to the Pink Floyd The Early Years 1965-1972 box set, are the series of book-bound individual collections from the box set, which go under the title 'The Early Years, 1965-1972: The Individual Volumes'.
These individual volumes are broken down into the years 1965-1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971 and finally 1972. As those familiar with the contents of the box set will know, these go under the titles CAMBRIDGE ST/ATION, GERMIN/ATION, DRAMATIS/ATION, DEVI/ATION, REVERBER/ATION, OBFUSC/ATION, which (it has been revealed) were titles dreamt up by Roger Waters to give an insight into where the band were at that particular point in their career.
Just to clarify, the box set also included an exclusive selection of additional material, BONUS CONTINU/ATION, which is not getting a standalone release, nor will the additional memorabilia or reproduction vinyl singles be getting a release outside of the box set.
The complete Early Years box set is still available from most retailers, as is the 2CD highlights album The Early Years – CRE/ATION.
To place your orders for the individual volumes, please use the following links:
It is worth checking the other Amazon stores, rather than just your local one, as pricing varies hugely; they will ship internationally. Buying through our links will give a small but vital contribution toward running this site, and is hugely appreciated. There is NO region coding on the Blu-ray and/or DVD discs, so if purchasing from a different region (e.g. you're in North America, buying from Europe, or vice versa), then all discs should be compatible with your players.
Celebrating its tenth anniversary next month, Record Store Day 2017 hits independent record stores on April 22nd, with a special Pink Floyd release. RSD offers limited run pressings, available for one day only through independent record stores.
The item in question is a 12", single-sided 180-gram pressing, with an otherwise unreleased version of Interstellar Overdrive. This was recorded at the Thompson Private Recording Company in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, in October 1966, and used in Anthony Stern's film 'San Francisco'. It's a mono recording, around fifteen minutes long, and housed in special packaging.
As with all Record Store Day releases, it will not be available online (other than inevitably on eBay from the morning of April 18th) but while stocks last in participating independent record stores. Be prepared to get to your local store prior to opening, and be ready to queue!
There are a lot of independent stores that participate in Record Store Day. Not all of them will choose to participate in all promotions, or carry all releases. Just because a store is listed on the RSD website does NOT mean it will have the goodie or record you're looking for. That said, find a store near you and check with them directly. They won't hold an item aside for you, but at least you'll know if it will be worth the trip!
Yesterday evening, another short video has been shared on Roger Waters' social media platforms to help tease the new album. As we noted previously, "Is This The Life We Really Want?" is released on May 19th, but other than the (now three) short video clips, no other information is currently available. We suspect full details, including the opportunity to pre-order the album, will be along soon, but in the meantime, here's the third taster:
Published on April 13th 2017 is Vinyl . Album . Cover . Art: The Complete Hipgnosis Catalogue, written by Aubrey 'Po' Powell, creative director of Pink Floyd, with whom he is currently working on the forthcoming V&A exhibition 'Their Mortal Remains', which opens on May 13th.
Founded in 1967 by Storm Thorgerson and Po, Hipgnosis studio
transformed the look of music albums forever. Their revolutionary cover art moved away from the conventional group shots favoured by record companies of the day,
resulting in the ground-breaking, mainly surreal photo designs which define the albums of many of the biggest names in the history of popular music: 10cc, AC/DC,
Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, The Police, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul
McCartney, Robert Plant, Syd Barrett, Throbbing Gristle, T. Rex, Wings, Yes, Bad
Company and XTC to name but a few.
With a foreword by Peter Gabriel, Vinyl . Album . Cover . Art, does justice to the work of the most important design collective in music history, presenting the complete, definitive and never-before-published catalogue of Hipgnosis. Arranged chronologically, it features every single Hipgnosis cover – 373 in total – all stunningly remastered from the original artwork, coupled with detailed information by Po and Storm Thorgerson on the images and the stories behind their creation. An insightful introductory text by Po charts the story of Hipgnosis, while extensive articles by Peter Gabriel, Storm Thorgerson, Marcus Bradbury and Pentagram's Harry Pearce provide engrossing insights into the way these incredible artworks came into being; place the covers in context; and reflect on their enduring impact on album design.
Following his performance of the show on December 13th in Dubai, and February 10th in London, "Guy Pratt is The Sideman" is lined up for more unmissable performances, one this month, one next, and a series of them in August.
For those who aren't aware of this show, in February 2013 Guy performed in a packed, sold out Komedia in Brighton for the first night of a then new tour, presenting "Guy Pratt is The Sideman". The one-man show celebrated Guy's 30 years as the bass player of choice for the heavyweights of rock and pop, including Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, Robert Palmer, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Bryan Ferry, Jimmy Page, David Coverdale, Womack & Womack, and The Smiths.
His one man show is all about life at the pointy end of the music business; Guy regales audiences with at times jaw-dropping stories from behind the scenes - the real truth about being on the road or in a recording studio! His self-deprecating wit is irresistible and his rip-roaring anecdotes have to be heard to be believed. With frequent musical examples courtesy of his beloved vintage Fender bass, and a electric guitar and amp combo, the Brighton audience clearly had a great time, even coercing Guy into an encore for the extended show. Similar scenes were found on the rest of that tour, three years ago now.
This week, on Tuesday, March 21st, Guy returns to the Komedia in Brighton. Tickets from Komedia.co.uk now. On April 23rd, he performs at the Bingley Arts Centre, and tickets are now available from Ticketsource.co.uk. Finally, between August 14th-28th, he takes the show to the world renowned Edinburgh Festival, playing the Fringe under the show title "Inglorious Bassterd". Tickets should be available soon from EdFringe.com.
