UPDATE: 8:20pm BST: BOTH SHOWS HAVE NOW BEEN CANCELLED.

David Gilmour was due to play the first of two shows in the glorious Piazza San Marco in Venezia (Venice), Italy tonight.

At around 5pm, just before the soundcheck for the show, a structural defect was found in the scaffolding of the stage, which has rendered the whole structure unsafe.

Two pictures of the affected area are shown to the right. On the grounds of safety, the show has naturally been cancelled. David's management have offered their most sincere apologies for this.

The stage is a huge, heavy structure, and it doesn't bear thinking about should anything go wrong with band, crew and audience in the area.

At the recent press launch of Pink Floyd's PULSE on DVD, the band recalled the seating collapse at the first night of the band's run at Earls Court. Today's events must bring back the memories of that worrying time.

Ticket refunds can be obtained from the ticket agents and the box office in Piazza San Marco itself.

Our thanks to Enrico and our other friends over at Italy's Floyd Channel website for their help with this story.
