Album promotion and vinyl release |
Promotional items:The main promotional item to have appeared is a CD single of Money.
Featuring a new cover image, and
a picture label, it was released by EMI in the UK. The catalogue
number is CDEMDJ620. To see a larger version of the CD, click on the
thumbnail to launch a new window with it in.
There were also some promotional
t-shirts printed up, but these are regularly offered for sale and the
suspicion is that either it wasn't such a limited printing of these
shirts, or that they have been copied by counterfeit manufacturers.
Along with a mousemat (again,
copied quite widely) the only other item (apart from the inevitable
advertising posters - noted below) there was a very fetching crystal
prism, but these were achingly rare, and no copies have been seen on
the market. Press Advertisement Campaign Teaser slogans/Poster slogans:
Do You Have A Dark Side?
These were all used seperately by
EMI (UK) as part of the advertisement campaign for the new edition of
Dark Side Of The Moon, accompanied by various stained-glass images. 30th Anniversary Edition - Limited Edition Audiophile VinylAs part of the re-release of this new edition of Dark Side Of The Moon, an audiophile version of the vinyl was created. Released on April 7th 2003, this edition has some subtle differences to the original... The first thing you notice, assuming your copy is still shrink-wrapped, is that there is a 10 inch x 10 inch flyer over the famous prism. This is to inform the buyer that this is, in fact, the new 30th anniversary edition of the record, and lets them know about the goodies to be found inside the packaging.
This includes the record pressed
on virgin, 180gm vinyl - nice and thick, a good solid dependable feel -
a gatefold sleeve, with the lyrics on the inner face of the sleeve, the
two original posters and two original stickers, and a brand new poster
too... Opening the package, and sliding the vinyl out of the back compartment of the sleeve, gives you a surprise. The label is true to the original - down to the Harvest logo, the original catalogue number, credits and so on... the only clue that it is a new edition, is the "Made In EU" at the bottom of the label. The original version of course did NOT have this! This I found to be a very nice touch (the fact that they have kept the packaging and labels true to the original - not, of course, the "Made In EU" credit!) which doesn't tend to happen so much these days.
It is clear that they wanted this new pressing to be as authentic as possible. Which they have achieved... The cherry on the icing on the cake (!) is the new poster, created by Storm Thorgerson, very much with the whole thirtieth anniversary concept in mind. As you should be able to make out from the picture here, there are thirty different representations of pyramids, prisms, and triangles, from sensible to downright silly (the samosa with a side of mango chutney, by the look of it!). Much thought must have gone into this image, an early version of which can be found in the latest edition of Storm's "Mind Over Matter" book (a great read, and a must buy if you've not already got it!), and a nice addition to the package. Overall, a very well put-together item, and a must for most Pink Floyd collections. It is unlikely to be available for very long... so make sure you snap it up before it disappears. It is certainly still available from Amazon through this link and no doubt from other retailers too, for a while, but numbers of available copies must be dwindling dramatically now. |
