The lockdown period seems to have been beneficial, not just for reducing the spread of infection, but encouraging writers to pull books together, and we are now starting to see the fruits of these labours, with a number of publications being announced... and here's another. Arriving in bookshops, both online and along the high street, on (updated) February 10th, 2022, is a new, 320-page book from Aubrey 'Po' Powell - Through the Prism: Untold rock stories from the Hipgnosis archive. Founded in 1968 by Po, Storm Thorgerson and Peter Christopherson, graphic design firm Hipgnosis gained a legendary status by transforming the look of album art through their designs for artists such as AC/DC, 10cc, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Syd Barrett, and Black Sabbath. The publishers promise that in the book, "Powell presents brutally honest, entertaining and revealing insider stories from the world of rock, featuring an eclectic cast of pop stars, comedians, actors, managers, gangsters, and inspirational world figures from 1966 on. His narrative is packed with anecdotes - from the founding of Hipgnosis to surviving drugs busts, and from the creative process behind the most iconic album artworks of all time to mounting the Pink Floyd exhibition, Their Mortal Remains - and is richly illustrated with Hipgnosis artwork and Powell's own photographs. "Drama and creativity are the common threads throughout these amazing stories. With candor and insightful reflection, Powell reveals how he and Storm became an effective creative partnership despite their volatile relationship; how the final colour artwork for Led Zeppelinâs Houses Of The Holy was created; how the most iconic album cover of all time â The Dark Side Of The Moon â came about; and how the 2017 Pink Floyd retrospective became the largest and most successful music exhibition ever mounted by the Victoria and Albert Museum â despite the deeply antagonistic and dysfunctional relationship between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. Throughout, Powell exposes how the trappings of fame and glory upset the balance of everyday life, bringing creativity and destruction in equal measure. "Packed with exciting insider stories and anecdotes featuring famous musicians, managers, and actors, Through the Prism is a must-have for music and pop-culture fans." Certainly sounds a cracking read, which we can't wait to get our hands on. You can order this book through the following links, taking advantage of Amazon's free pre-order price guarantee - should their asking price drop at any point between you ordering it, and release, they will automatically charge you the lowest price during that period! Ordering through our links also helps with BD's ongoing running costs, and we really appreciate it: Amazon UK, Amazon.com, Amazon Canada, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Spain and Amazon Italy.
On February 18th, 2022, the Restored and Re-Edited version of Pink Floyd's P.U.L.S.E. concert film (shot on 20th October 1994 at London's Earls Court) is set to be released as a 2 Blu-ray or 2 DVD deluxe box set, with the return of the flashing LED on the spine (as seen on the original 1995 CD release) powered by replaceable AA batteries! These deluxe packages include music videos, screen films, documentaries, rehearsal footage and more, along with a 60 page booklet. On Pink Floyd's social channels, they mention that, in an interview from 1995 with Mojo Magazine, Nick Mason talked about the flashing LED. "Essentially, it's a device which we thought was entertaining. It's an idea of Storm Thorgerson's which related to Dark Side and the pulse, and it's a live album so the box is "alive". After that, in terms of seriously deep meanings, one might be struggling a bit." The original flashing LED package is much loved by the fans, and the initial announcement video leads with the blink of the light. The new box sets will be designed for easy replacement of the 2 AA batteries; the UK release in 1995 was powered by one AA, but the packaging wasn't designed in such a way that it was easy to change without some damage, albeit internally, to the sleeve. This time there shouldn't be the same problem!

For the 2018 Record Store Day, one of the more popular and sought after releases was a new mono edition of Pink Floyd's The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, the band's superb 1967 debut album. The mono mix on the album was remastered in 2017 from the original mono analogue tapes by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman. For those who missed out on this one-day-only release (which came with a Pink Floyd Records catalogue number of PFRLP26), there's some great news. This excellent sounding mix is coming on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl, on March 4th 2022. It comes without the additional outer sleeve and poster that the Record Store Day edition came with, instead appearing in the classic cover (with a removable sticker), as per the picture shown here. The record labels mimic the original black and gold Columbia records labels. It has a catalogue number of PFRLP38, for those who are keeping track of all those - and we know a few people who are doing just that! For the 2019 Record Store Day, one of the more popular and sought after releases was a new mono edition of Pink Floyd's second album, A Saucerful Of Secrets, released in 1968. This followed one year on from the equally popular mono edition of The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, the band's superb 1967 debut album, released as part of the 2018 RSD. The mono mix on the album was remastered in 2017 from the original mono analogue tapes by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman. For those who missed out on this one-day-only release (which came with a Pink Floyd Records catalogue number of PFRLP29), there's some great news. This excellent sounding mix is coming on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl, on April 29th 2022. It comes with the classic cover (with a removable sticker, featuring a great shot of the band), as per the picture shown here. The record labels mimic the original Columbia records labels. It has a catalogue number of PFRLP30, for those who are keeping track of all those - and we know a few people who are doing just that! Just announced: Pink Floyd is releasing two physical versions of their first newly recorded music in over 25 years, âHey Hey Rise Upâ. The single, which was initially released digitally in April in support of the people of Ukraine and reached number 1 in 27 countries, will be available on 7â and CD single. Both formats will also feature a newly reworked version of âA Great Day For Freedomâ taken from the bandâs 1994 album, The Division Bell. The single will be available on 15 July (excluding Japan, where it is released on 3 August - and USA, Canada, Australia and Mexico, where it is released on 21 October). The lead track sees David Gilmour and Nick Mason joined by long time Pink Floyd bass player Guy Pratt, with Nitin Sawhney on keyboards, and features vocals by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Ukrainian band Boombox. Proceeds for the physical release and the ongoing digital proceeds will go to Ukraine humanitarian relief. For this limited edition release, David Gilmour revisited The Division Bell track âA Great Day For Freedomâ. He has reworked the song using the original tapes which feature Nick Mason on drums and Richard Wright on keyboards, along with backing vocals from Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine and Durga McBroom. The music for this song was composed by Gilmour with lyrics by Polly Samson and himself. Talking about the inspiration for âHey Hey Rise Upâ Gilmour commented, âAny war, but particularly a war that is started by a world superpower against an independent democratic nation, has got to raise enormous anger and frustration in one. As I said before, I have a small connection there; my daughter-in-law is from Ukraine. And the band Boombox are Ukrainian people that I already knew, not well, but from some time ago. Itâs an enormously difficult, frustrating, and anger-making thing that one human being could have the power to invade another independent democratic nation and set about killing the population. Itâs just obscene to an extent that is just beyond my belief.â You can order through a growing number of retailers and as we discover them, we will list them here.
To be released in the UK on 2nd September, the 'Analogue Productions 4LP Edition' of Roger Waters' incredible album, Amused To Death, is sure to be a popular (albeit very expensive) choice for those who want to hear the album hopefully at its very best. This audiophile favourite â with its Analogue Productions 2LP reissue in 2015 being a rapid seller - is back with an upgrade. Now a 45rpm, 4LP 200-gram set, the remastered audio completed by long-time Roger Waters/Pink Floyd collaborator and co-producer James Guthrie is apparently "chillingly detailed â every cricket chirp and dog bark on this distinctive album has even more sonic intensity and dimension. An unblinking look at an entertainment-obsessed society, Amused to Death addresses issues that have only grown in complexity and urgency over the past two decades. "With Amused to Death, Roger Waters sounded the alarm about a society increasingly - and unthinkingly â in thrall to its television screens. Twenty-three years later, it still speaks to our present moment in ways that could scarcely have been anticipated two decades ago. In 2022, television is just one option in an endless array of distractions available to us anytime, anywhere, courtesy of our laptops, tablets and smartphones. With eyes glued to our screens, the dilemmas and injustices of the real world can easily recede from view. "[It is being] pressed at Quality Record Pressings [with] updated cover and gatefold art by Sean Evans, the creative director of Waters' 2010-2013 "The Wall Live" tour and movie." You can place your orders now though this direct link at RoughTrade.com. For those of you in North America, AcousticSounds are listing this release, but their details are much vaguer - they don't have a release date, and the product they are offering is apparently on four 180g pieces of vinyl, and not 200g as with Rough Trade's version. However, this might be an outdated listing. AcousticSounds do ship worldwide, although shipping costs can be high, so the Rough Trade option might be preferable (especially if it avoids import duties for you).
Something that we know probably most - if not all - of you have been eagerly awaiting, has now been announced. Pink Floyd's Animals 2018 Remix is being released on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), Blu-ray, and SACD on September 16th, and on October 7th, in Deluxe Gatefold format. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes the LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. The Blu-ray and DVD audio include the 2018 remix in Stereo, 5.1 Surround (both by James Guthrie) and the original 1977 Stereo mix. The 32-page booklet features rarely seen behind the scenes photographs of the original album sleeve shoot along with live images and memorabilia. The album's iconic cover shows an inflatable pig (known as Algie) floating between two chimneys of London's Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters, and designed by long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis Studios. For this new release, the artwork has been re-designed for the modern era by Stormâs Hipgnosis partner Aubrey 'Po' Powell. Taking new shots of the building as it appeared during the recent conversion work, Po experimented with new angles and produce some striking new takes on the classic original. Po elaborates: "With the original 1977 album cover being such an iconic piece of stand-alone art, I had the chance to update it, which was a rather daunting task, but Hipgnosis took the opportunity to re-photograph the image to reflect a changing world, and by using modern digital colouring techniques I kept Pink Floyd's rather bleak message of moral decay using the Orwellian themes of animals, the pig Algie, faithful to the message of the album." The main image of the train tracks and shed, already familiar to many of you following Roger Waters' social media posts about it, features on most of the formats, but there's a strikingly different image - a more dark, moody and colourful look at Battersea Power Station at night - used for the Blu-ray cover. The full list of format details for the Animals 2018 Remix can be seen here, and here are the direct links available so far to place your orders (which help us with Brain Damage's ongoing running costs, without costing anything further to you!). If the store link for the format you want isn't "clickable", that's because they haven't got the item listing live yet. Please keep trying! The SACD only seems to be available from a couple of retailers currently.
On its way is a new book from acclaimed Pink Floyd historian, author and Brain Damage Magazine founder, Glenn Povey. In the book, Pink Floyd in North America 1966-1983, Glenn delves deep into Floyd's history within the biggest music market in the world. This book not only charts the concerts they played and records that Floyd released in the USA and Canada from 1967 through to 1983 but it also looks in great detail at the band's relationship with their American record company; the promotional aspects (or lack off!) that propelled Floyd to stadium status, and extensive details of TV and radio appearances, along with band interviews and much more. As expected with one of Glenn's books, it has been painstakingly researched with loads of new information unearthed. Pink Floyd In North America shines new light on the band from their days playing small clubs right through to superstar status as one of the world's biggest bands. The book is lavishly illustrated throughout with loads of memorabilia including backstage passes, gig posters, media adverts and a raft of photos, both on and off stage. You can order direct from the publisher themselves, with those who pre-order early getting their name on a dedicated fan page in the book, or you can order from the other normal outlets: Amazon UK, Germany, France, Italy or Spain. It isn't currently listed on Amazon.com or Canada, but should that change, we will let you know. It is also available from WHSmith Books, Waterstones and Wordery. Obviously, the price varies between the different retailers, and in different countries, so can be worth shopping around. ![]() PINK FLOYD SCANDINAVIA 1967-1972 - book To be published Now due for publication in 2022, is Pink Floyd Scandinavia 1967 – 1972. Immediately after Pink Floyd's debut album The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, the band was sent to Aarhus, Stockholm and Copenhagen on their first tour outside Britain. With their cutting-edge psychedelic music and shows they created something completely new and exciting wherever they went. This book follows them on their early tours in Scandinavia at humble venues to their return in the following years as they rose to become one of the biggest rock acts in the world. Created by the Unseen Nordic Archives, the 176 page book promises an extraordinary collection of unknown and rarely seen photos from these tours - more than 200 pictures in total - added with new interviews from many of the key people involved and newspaper articles from local Danish and Swedish papers at the time. The Unseen Nordic Archive series of books enjoy access to an archive of over 500,000 images from Scandinavian photographers and newly researched interview material from the people who were there. Certainly sounds very interesting; we should have more about this in due course, and hopefully will be reviewing it too. In the meantime, the various European Amazon stores are offering the book as a pre-order, through these links: Amazon UK, Amazon France, Amazon Germany, Amazon Spain and Amazon Italy. Should you nearest Amazon store not have this book on offer, feel free to use an alternative one as they all ship books internationally. UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances the book has been delayed, but the publishers are hoping it will be available soon. We will keep you posted about this book. A new book is due to be published that should prove a fascinating insight into the audio side of Pink Floyd's development. Written by music industry expert Mark Cunningham, who used to run the magazine Total Production International, Pink Floyd: A Live Sound History is due at some point but to whet your appetites, Mark has given us a sneak preview of what's to come. The book will tell the story of how Pink Floyd pioneered live sound and how equipment manufacturers fought to keep up with the band's demands for better, bigger and higher quality, in tandem with their equally adventurous touring stage productions. It will feature rare images and exclusive interviews conducted by me with key touring personnel and industry figures including Robbie Williams, Phil Taylor, Mick Kluczynski, Andy Jackson, James Guthrie, Buford Jones, Charlie Watkins (WEM), Alan Parsons, Seth Goldman, Bryan Grant and more. A large portion of the manuscript was actually proof-read by Roger Waters who made comments that have informed the content. Solo tours up to and including The Wall Live will also feature, as a way of highlighting the further progression of live sound influenced by the Floyd. At this stage, a firm date isn't available, nor are pre-orders being invited. As soon as more information is available, we will of course update you... Possibly in 2022:
As and when we hear anything else, we will update this page... |
