The 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony featured a couple of direct Pink Floyd references - specifically, the pig over Battersea Power Station, the clock tower of Big Ben having spinning hands with the Floyd's Time accompanying it, and at the firework finale, Eclipse being played to stunning effect. Other Floyd references included things like the hospital beds, akin to those on the cover of Momentary Lapse.

Elsewhere, during the female gymnastics on Tuesday, a Romanian athlete used Shine On part 1 to do her routine to. The music was performed by another artist and was tailored and edited to the routine. It was described by the commentator as 'A mood piece'!

Singer Ed Sheeran has now gone against normal protocol and revealed a small part of the normally secret plans for the Closing Ceremony (Sunday, August 12th, from 7:30pm BST). He has told Australian radio station Nova that he will be one of the performers, with an interesting backing. "I'm playing the closing ceremony - which I think is kinda cool right? A lot of people think that I'm doing a song with The Who but I'm not - I'm doing a song with Pink Floyd. I'm doing 'Wish You Were Here'."

Sheeran then confirmed that in actual fact, it would be Nick Mason, and not Pink Floyd, that would form part of his backing band! Neither Roger nor David will be participating. Other artists reportedly taking part include The Who, Take That, and George Michael.
