COMMENTS

Due to the critical success of the four initial shows in May 2018, held in tiny venues in London's Camden and Putney, Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets announced a full European tour for September last year. The expanded shows for the full tour were even more highly acclaimed, and it came as no surprise when further dates for 2019 were announced!

Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets brings together some familiar names, all great musicians: joining Nick are Gary Kemp and Lee Harris on guitars, Guy Pratt on bass, and Dom Beken on keyboards. Kemp is best known for his work with Spandau Ballet, Harris as having played guitar with The Blockheads (Ian Dury's band), Pratt needs no introduction, and Beken is principally known for his work with The Orb, and Transit Kings (with Pratt). The band will be playing early Pink Floyd songs.

This is a unique opportunity to experience Pink Floyd's celebrated and significant early body of work played live including songs from albums 'The Piper At The Gates of Dawn' and 'A Saucerful Of Secrets'.

The regular sale of tickets started on FRIDAY, MARCH 15th at 12pm (lunchtime), via Ticketmaster.cz.

Our thanks to Vlado Marcinek for the ticket scan to the right, and for the poster which is signed by Nick, Gary and Dom - click the poster to see it in greater clarity.

CONCERT REVIEW and PICTURES by BD CONTRIBUTOR, Vlado Marcinek

It was a hot summer evening of July 25th and fans gathered together in the historical Lucerna Hall to taste a little bit of psychedelia. And the younger generation would witness what the gigs were like in the 60s for the very first time. And I couldn't wait.

Everyone wanted to see this new band in action. Nick and Guy Pratt returned to Prague after 25 years, bringing with them Gary Kemp of Spandau Ballet and Lee Harris on guitars and Dom Beken on keyboards forming Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets band.

And trust me, there are no secrets in the Saucerful of Secrets band in terms of how well they played! What a gig, what a night!

Lucerna Hall was the perfect venue for the occasion. Ideal size and type, intimate and hot and sweaty as we did notice. However it was certainly a refreshing change as opposed to hockey stadiums or football arenas. This is the type of venue the band was looking for on this tour trying to recreate the atmosphere of the late 60s.

It seems after Roger and David doing their own things it was probably time for Nick to establish his own band, take his favourite bits and go on his solo tour. And it’s a thrill to see this sort of third rendition of Pink Floyd catalogue. The setlist was made of pre-Dark Side era albums and one single Point Me At The Sky which served as a goodbye song.

One could say these are the songs you always wanted to see and hear live. Time doesn’t mean anything here as all bits sounded as fresh and powerful as they did back in the days.

The band was phenomenal, enjoying it from start to finish. The energy coming from the stage was mesmerising and we gave it all back in return. I really think they couldn't have wished for a better audience.

Needless to say there is a good portion of improvisation during the gig of this type. Set The Controls was a good example. Keyboard sounds Dom Beken created were doing psychedelia a justice. At some point he delivered frequencies which caused your clothes to tremble and your guts started turning upside down. The crowd went crazy.

There was also another big and long round of applause both for Rick and Syd at some point of the evening. And of course more than one for The Heartbeat of Pink Floyd himself, Sir Nick Mason. Also, those effects with oil and colours projected on the back of the stage were done live by the guys at the mixing desk which was a nice touch.

During one of the speeches Gary revealed it was actually Lee's idea to persuade Nick to take those old songs and take them on the road. And to put Nick back behind the drums again where he belongs to. And we cannot thank him enough.

There were number of local Pink Floyd fan club (pinkfloyd.cz) members in the audience taking pictures. I’ve tried to take some as well, but the best ones I've ever seen were taken by David Kasparek, shown below. Oh, and I managed to get Nick, Gary and Dom to sign a poster for me before the show (shown above, with the ticket).

So to answer that silly question - "why does it all have to be so terribly loud?" Well, because that's the way we like it!
