When Nick Mason (during the press launch of the Rome staging of The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains) made comments in Italy about heading out to small venues, to play early Pink Floyd songs, few took the remarks seriously. As unlikely as it seemed, Nick was entirely truthful and in the initial announcement a set of four shows in London were announced for his new band. Due to the critical success of those shows in May 2018, held in small venues in Camden and Putney, a full European tour was announced for September. The expanded shows for the full tour were even more highly acclaimed, and it came as no surprise when further dates for 2019 were announced!
Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets brings together some familiar names, all great musicians: joining Nick are Gary Kemp and Lee Harris on guitars, Guy Pratt on bass, and Dom Beken on keyboards. Kemp is best known for his work with Spandau Ballet, Harris as having played guitar with The Blockheads (Ian Dury's band), Pratt needs no introduction, and Beken is principally known for his work with The Orb, and Transit Kings (with Pratt). The band will be playing early Pink Floyd songs.
This is a unique opportunity to experience Pink Floyd's celebrated and significant early body of work played live including songs from albums 'The Piper At The Gates of Dawn' and 'A Saucerful Of Secrets'.

Following the very successful US and Canadian tour, the band are back in Britain now for a string of dates this week. A packed schedule - Aylesbury, Cambridge, two nights in London, and this night in Cardiff, all in the space of a week. Tonight's show in Cardiff, the first time for quite a while a member of the Floyd performed in the Welsh city, was a great start to proceedings, with an audience who were clearly loving the show.

I was lucky enough to attend the NMSOS show at Portsmouth Guildhall last year with a good mate of mine, David. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to repeat the experience again in 2019, but this time at St David's Hall in Cardiff. As I live in the SW of England and David lives in the SE, we decided it would be a good idea to stay over in a budget hotel in Cardiff. First surprise of the day was spotting Harry Waters and Larry John McNally in the hotel reception. McNally Waters were, of course, the support band for NMSOS.
After having a wander round the city centre and checking out a great pub that was once a theatre, we made our way over to the venue. We were very impressed with St David's Hall. As it is on multiple levels with several bars, it felt very relaxed at not at all overcrowded, unlike many venues I've experienced in the past. The staff were particularly friendly and helpful too.
Watched the McNally Waters performance. The band was a four piece and they did a very good 30 minute set - though I would have liked this to have lasted a bit longer. During the next interval, it was announced over the PA that the bar would be closing once the NMSOS set had started. I certainly wish they would also do this at other venues, as it means that we don't have to put up with loads of folks getting up and down throughout the concert to either get even more drinks or to go to the toilet.
Anyway, the main event started on time and was even better than last time that we saw it in Portsmouth. The sound was very good, the lights seemed to be a bit more sophisticated than in Portsmouth and the performance by the band was excellent. I loved the addition of Childhood's End and Remember a Day to the setlist. However, the latter of these did end too soon compared the version on record. I'm still not keen on Vegetable Man, but at least I knew what to expect this time!! (unlike the first time I heard this song in Portsmouth). On the night, my favourite songs were Astronomy Domine, One of these Days, Remember a Day and a superb performance of Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun. Nick's drumming throughout the night was great, but he particularly excelled during Set the Controls.
So, all in all, it was great concert in a great venue in a great city and, just for good measure, we ended up having a few drinks back at the hotel with the bassist and drummer from McNally Waters.
