john lennon called me normalAs many of you will recall, legendary producer, and later recording artist in his own right, Norman "Hurricane" Smith, sadly passed away in March.

In recent years, he was working on the full publication of his memoirs, in the book "John Lennon Called Me Normal". Containing many rare pictures, much of which have not been seen before, the book contains his sharp and amusing story of working with the Beatles and Pink Floyd at Abbey Road.

As a fitting tribute to Norman, his long-awaited book has now been published through specialists Lulu.com, and we had five copies to give away to Brain Damage visitors. Were you one of the lucky winners? Read on to find out!

We were knocked out by the sheer volume of entries for the competition, and the unusual nature of these. Once the competition had been running for a short while, the vast majority of entries we were receiving all came from the fairer sex. Now, we normally get ladies entering our competitions but to receive almost exclusively female entries is rather unusual!

Anyway, to the winners, all of which correctly identified that Amos Gherkin was the name that Norman Smith was considering using for his solo recording career, until he decided on Hurricane Smith:

  • Jort Maas, Badhoevedorp, The Netherlands
  • Helen Winter, Scunthorpe, England
  • Leighton Davies, Neath, Wales
  • Caroline Gossage, Leeds, England
  • Annamaria Colitti, Sala Consilina, Italy

Our congratulations to these five lucky winners, and better luck to those who weren't fortunate this time around. You can order the book now from Lulu.com, the ONLY place you can buy it!
