Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010 DVDThe Festival of Speed is the largest motoring garden party in the world - a unique summer weekend that brings together an impossibly heady mix of cars, stars and motor sport 'royalty' to create the largest car culture event in the world. Held in the immaculate grounds of Goodwood House, in Sussex, England, this annual event is a true celebration of motor sport and all things automotive.

Released on October 4th, "2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed" is the DVD souvenir of the event, and with Nick Mason one of those included on the DVD, we've taken a good look at the package...

This year's event commemorated 100 years of Alfa Romeo - each event has marked a particular anniversary, or style of racing. In a departure from previous years, special musical guests launched the Festival, and we get to see Jimmie Vaughan, ZZ Top and Jeff Beck regaling the crowds from the track!

The main feature begins with shots of various celebrities explaining just why the Goodwood Festival of Speed is such a special event with people the world over, travelling from all four corners of the planet for the three day celebration of two and four wheeled vehicles. This year even saw the likes of Star Wars creator George Lucas coming over to be one of the judges in the Cartier Style et Lux event at the FoS.

One of the first things that strikes you on viewing this DVD is the wonderful camerawork, from wide, sweeping shots, through to in-car footage allowing you to see just how fast, and close, to ancient flint walls the cars pass.

For newcomers to the event, there's a lovely sequence explaining the route of the hill run (the main timed event that the multitude of car and bike classes participate in) and why it is such a technical exercise that really sorts out the men from the boys!

The main feature, despite being just 45 minutes long, gives an excellent flavour of the event, taking in most, if not all, of the main things that take place over the weekend - the rich, car-by-car detail is present on the disc, but held within the bonus features section so as to keep these parts separate for those who want them. It is also where you'll find footage of Nick Mason in action properly, apart from a "blink and you'll miss him" shot of Nick in the main feature.

As with last year, Nick was entrusted with a one-off, faithful reproduction of the legendary Auto Union type D, which was a big feature of pre-war racing, and in the hill-climb section of the bonus features on the DVD you can see Nick blasting the car up the hill, past Goodwood House. It is a sadly quite brief appearance by Nick; we'd hoped that he might have been tracked down during the weekend for an interview on camera, but this wasn't to be. We have to content ourselves with a demonstration of his driving skills!

Elsewhere in the extras section, you get a section with onboard camera footage, a feature on the recently introduced rally stage (held at the top of the hill-climb area), footage of the Red Arrows aerobatic display and the Vulcan flypast. There's also a FoSTech feature, which looks at the future of motoring, with an eye on reducing the environmental impact of cars.

Clearly not a disk for the non-petrolhead Floyd fan, Nick's inclusion, however brief, might be the tipping point for some to indulge in this DVD. Not least, it might reveal the wonderful world of the Festival of Speed to a new audience, who'll start making plans for attending a future event (or the associated Goodwood Revival Festival, which finds Nick and the other drivers in real "retro" mode!).

You can order the DVD, which is a limited edition, from HMV.com, Play.com, or Amazon UK, all of which offer it at around 42% off the normal retail price.
