Brain Damage and A Fleeting Glimpse

Ron Geesin, July 2008Hi there! Well, you wanted more on the stunning Atom Heart Mother concerts, and thanks to Ron Geesin, now you have it! If you've not read our interview with him yet, and seen Joe Geesin's exclusive pics of David Gilmour and the rest of the musicians at the final rehearsals, just click on Ron's face to go straight to the first of the three parts. As the interview went so well, Ron has decided that this is his FINAL interview on any Floyd-related subject, so enjoy it!

COMING UP: There are the various Syd Barrett tribute events in October; there's David's "Live in Gdańsk" album, due this month in five different packages; and there's Fender's DG Black Strat guitar. Who knows what else will emerge over the coming months?!

No news yet on the surround mix of Wish You Were Here, or a Roger Waters live DVD, both things we get a LOT of emails about!

To show your support for what we do - the time, effort and money involved in running Brain Damage - please consider using our special links for buying things at Amazon (not just Floyd stuff). This really helps us, as do Paypal donations which also get put towards our hosting fees and other essential costs, keeping this site up and running. And it's very much appreciated!

Cheers!
All the Brain Damage team.

New Phil Manzanera guitar series starts Sunday
Written by Matt
Friday, 05 September 2008

phil manzaneraMany of you will recall Phil Manzanera's excellent, twelve-part "A is for Axe" series which was broadcast on Planet Rock radio from the start of August, 2007. The show celebrated the world's best guitarists past and present, and was essential listening.

Well, some good news! Phil returns to Planet Rock on Sunday (September 7th) for the first show in his new series, "6 Strings & A Plank Of Wood". With a focus on the art of the guitar and its role within various genres of rock music, Phil speaks to the pioneers and the purveyors of the instrument, and looks at their styles, their influences and their role in making the guitar such a popular instrument.

With analysis of the worlds of the blues, prog, art rock, and psychedelia, we'd be surprised if he didn't cover things close to the hearts of visitors to this site! The first show airs at 7pm this Sunday, and is repeated at 7pm next Friday.

For more details, visit www.PlanetRock.com. The radio station is broadcast in the UK on DAB Digital Radio, Sky Channel 0110 and Virgin Media cable 924. They have a live stream on the internet, allowing listeners worldwide to tune in.

Live From Abbey Road on Belgium TV from tonight
Written by Matt
Thursday, 04 September 2008

Live From Abbey RoadStarting tonight on Belgium television is a re-run of the excellent, twelve-part first series of Live From Abbey Road. An excellent showcase, focusing on the music, and the musicians, it had some of the best present-day musicians treading the boards in the hallowed London recording studio - including, of course, David Gilmour and his band.

Airing at 11:20pm (Dutch time) on Canvas Television, they are curiously kicking off things with the 11th show of the series (featuring Paul Simon, Corinne Bailey Rae and Primal Scream) which is followed next Thursday by the 10th show of the series. As a reminder, the show which featured David Gilmour was the 5th, and at the moment it is anyone's guess as to which week Canvas will be showing it, so keep an eye on local listings! If you can't wait, a 2-disc DVD was released in October 2007 with highlights of the series (more details here). Our thanks to Henk Deen for the info.

More David Gilmour UK radio interviews
Written by Matt
Thursday, 04 September 2008

With the build of activity in the run-up to the release of David Gilmour's Live In Gdansk, we've got a couple more dates for your diaries in case you weren't already aware of them...

First, there will be a live "Echoes" exclusive and interview with David on the always entertaining Radcliffe & Maconie show, which airs between 8pm and 10pm weekdays on the UK's BBC Radio 2; it is their Wednesday, September 24th show that has David guesting. You can tune in to BBC Radio 2 on 88-91 FM analogue, DAB Digital Radio, Freeview, Virgin Media cable/Sky satellite, or online at www.BBC.co.uk/Radio2. The show will also be available on the BBC iPlayer service (at the BBC website and on Virgin Media) for seven days following broadcast.

Two days later, on Friday, September 26th, David is interviewed on UK digital radio station Planet Rock. We'll update this story when the exact time has been confirmed but we suspect that David's interview will either be in the 6pm "Feature" slot, or the 7pm-11pm Nicky Horne show. You can tune in to Planet Rock on DAB Digital Radio, Virgin Media cable/Sky satellite, or online worldwide at www.PlanetRock.co.uk. They also have a "Listen Again" on-demand service, allowing you to listen to the show for seven days following broadcast.

David Gilmour interview in new Mojo Magazine
Written by Matt
Tuesday, 02 September 2008

mojo oct 2008 The October 2008 issue of the UK's Mojo Magazine is well worth picking up. Hitting UK stores today, and available in many countries worldwide as an import, it features an excellent interview with David Gilmour.

Conducted by Mark Blake, author of "Pigs Might Fly" (the paperback version of which is published on October 1st), the five page chat with David finds him in expansive and revealing mood, responding to Mark's well-pitched questions. It's one of the best interviews with David that we can remember reading, with him talking at length about the very early days, the "difficult middle years" where relationships within the band became somewhat strained, and what the future might bring from him as a solo artist, and his views on the future of Pink Floyd.

Elsewhere, there's a full page preview of the Syd Barrett tribute events (The City Wakes) being held in Cambridge next month, and fans of The Beatles and Queen will find much of interest too...
