Pink Floyd on John Peel tribute album Print E-mail

We recently brought you news of two upcoming releases that are tributes to the late DJ John Peel, both of which have an involvement with one or more members of Pink Floyd.

The single that is coming out - a cover of The Buzzcocks hit Ever Fallen In Love - is being released on 21st November, and all proceeds will be going to the charity Amnesty International. Sir Elton John is the latest big name to join those performing on the single, which includes Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey and David Gilmour.

The song will be first played simultaneously across all BBC radio stations on 10th October, and the first opportunity to see the video for Ever Fallen in Love will be on UK's Channel 4 TV on 13th October - which has been designated John Peel Day.

Peel, who was renowned for championing new bands throughout his long career, died aged 65 on 26th October 2004 while on holiday in Peru. In today's The Times newspaper in the UK, a feature on Peel as a preview to the 2-CD compilation album release on 17th October (next week; details below), included quotes from Roger and Nick:

Roger Waters: "His self-effacing style and evident integrity lent huge weight to all his musical crusades. I only knew him slightly but trusted him completely. His legacy lies with all the generations who learned humility and wisdom at his knee."

Nick Mason: "I introduced him to weird substances, an artichoke I think it was. I think he wondered if he was required to eat it or smoke it. Consequently I like to think that even in later years John saw me as truly avant-garde."

The album - "John Peel - A Tribute ('And This One Fades In Quietly...')" is a collection of many of Peel's favourites, including his hero Lonnie Donegan, his favourite band The Fall and his all-time favourite song, 'Teenage Kicks' by The Undertones. The Floyd contribution is "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun", which John played incessantly at home, even into his final years. It is not a newly recorded version, just to clarify.

A portion of profits will go to charities - The Salvation Army, East Anglia's Children's Hospices and The Kariandusi School Trust.
