Pink Floyd: greatest rock act of all time! Print E-mail
Written by Matt
Tuesday, 27 December 2005

After a memorable year, seeing Pink Floyd reunited with Roger Waters at the Live 8 concert in July, and induction into the UK Music Hall Of Fame in November, rock fans have now voted the band the "greatest rock act of all time" in a new survey, which is broadcast from today.

Led Zeppelin came second, followed by The Rolling Stones, in the 10th Planet Rock poll.

In the survey of 58,000 rock fans, the digital radio station's listeners also named the 1970s the golden age of rock, followed by the 1960s, the Spandex years of the 1980s and the 1990s grunge decade.

Nicky Horne, a presenter with Planet Rock, started counting down the results this morning at 9am, and the presentation of the results will be spread over four days.

He said: "Pink Floyd are one of the greatest bands in the history of rock and roll."

Here's the top ten:

  1. Pink Floyd
  2. Led Zeppelin
  3. The Rolling Stones
  4. The Who
  5. AC/DC
  6. U2
  7. Guns 'N' Roses
  8. Nirvana
  9. Bon Jovi
  10. 10 Jimi Hendrix

In a seperate poll, Pink Floyd appeared no less than seventeen times in the Arrow Rock 500 List in the Netherlands. The poll is the only Dutch all time classics list where you can vote for anything you want (no predefined selections).

The Floyd are the only band to appear twice in the top ten, this year gaining the coveted number three spot with Comfortably Numb (last year's number five). Traditionally, there are two songs which have ALWAYS got the top spots (Stairway To Heaven at number one, followed by Child In Time), so the fight is normally for the position that follows!
